#14. A tie between The Thing
and The Original Frycook
Good grief do people hate this one! Is it as bad as people say it is? Well, let’s take a good look.
It begins with Squidward checking the neighborhood to make sure that Spongebob and Patrick aren’t around. Once he sees nobody, he becomes relieved and he sits down on the couch to watch his favorite musician, Kelpy G
(probably not his favorite after, you know…
).
That is until Spongebob and Patrick decide to interrupt him and spend time with him. After Squidward tries to get them to go away, and since they won’t leave, he lets them sit with him. This proves to be a problem however, as Spongebob and Patrick continuously ask questions like ‘why is he so emotional’, ‘turn it up, turn it down’, ‘is he the bad guy’, etc.
This makes Squiddy flip his lid and he quickly leaves on his bike. And Spongebob and Patrick don’t say anything! What the heck? They just drove him out of the house and they didn’t even apologize! At least in Good Neighbors they TRIED to apologize!
Squidward tries to ride away when he crashes into a cement truck, and it dumps cement all over him, causing it to harden and make Squidward look like a… thing.
Yeah.
After a few days, Spongebob and Patrick find Squidward in Jellyfish Fields, but they don’t recognize him. They think he’s an endangered animal, so they decide to take him in as a pet, calling him Smelly.
SpongeBob: You can live here forever and ever.
[Smelly cries] Oh, look, Pat! He's crying tears of joy!
…
Really? Seriously? Your new pet is crying (with obvious pain in his voice) and you think he’s crying out of HAPPINESS? He and Patrick are just as oblivious as they were in Good Neighbors! No, scratch that. They’re MORE oblivious than they were in Good Neighbors! Here, they can’t tell that Smelly (Squidward) is obviously upset, even with the pain in his voice. At least in Good Neighbors they became AWARE of their idiocy when Squidward became ticked off with them!
Spongebob introduces Squidward to Gary, but since Gary doesn’t like him, he decides to let Squiddy live with Patrick. But things don’t work out to well…
·
SpongeBob: That's a great idea, Patrick. You always wanted a pet. [Smelly tries to escape through the door but keeps falling down] Isn't that cute? Look how excited he is to get to your house. [opens door] Bye, Smelly, have fun at Patrick's. [Smelly tries to get into Squidward's house]
·
Patrick: No, no, Smelly. Squidward doesn't like pets. [cut to under Patrick's rock] Hey, Smelly, wanna play catch? [throws ball at Smelly] Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it. [throws ball at Smelly again] Almost. [throws ball at Smelly again] Again. [throws ball at Smelly again] So close. [throws ball at Smelly again but it gets stuck in his eye] Yeah, now you're... [Smelly throws the ball at Patrick, knocking him down] Smelly! What's gotten into you?! [screams and jumps behind a chair and calls someone] Hello, Animal Control? There's a wild animal loose in my house. [person over phone is speaking gibberish] Sure, I'll hold.
Squidward tries to escape back into his house, but the SWAT team surrounds him and throws him in the animal truck.
Police: Wild animals don't belong here, son. They belong in the zoo.
No, they belong in the WILD you dingus! Oh, and guess what? ‘Smelly’ gets thrown in the truck along with a gigantic man-eating clam because why not?
And at the zoo, Spongebob and Patrick see a bunch a people staring at Squidward and making fun of him.
·
Isabelle: Mommy, what is that thing?
·
Sadie: I don't know but it's hideous, isn't it? [everyone laughs.]
Okay, zoos are for people to spot and gaze with interest at the sight of animals (and maybe even study them!), NOT to make fun of them! My god, is there ANY point in which the Bikini Bottomites are likeable, even in the slightest??
That night, Spongebob and Patrick sneak into Squidward’s cage and try to free him. The SWAT team catches them in the act, but before they can surround them again, Spongebob and Patrick take Squidward and go into the sewer.
They see a path, follow it, and end up in a jungle where there are creatures that look much like Squidward (covered in cement). Spongebob and Patrick set ‘Smelly’ free to live with the creatures, and the creatures carry Squidward to a stage when Kelpy G is playing the music to soothe them! Squidward listens to the music along with them, but then the cement cracks and breaks apart, and now Squidward, who is back to normal, is surrounded by a bunch of creatures that may or may not attack him.
Well, what do I think of it? Well, to be perfectly fair, I don’t really think this is one of the worst things to come out of Spongebob. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t necessarily think this episode is truly good, as for one, there’s quite a bit of Squidward Torture here and there, the zoo scene is utterly insulting, and I absolutely hated Spongebob and Patrick’s obliviousness in the first half. They weren’t this dumb in Good Neighbors! At least they were aware of their actions.
So why don’t I hate it? Well, for one thing, while the Squid Abuse is pretty bad, it’s not as dire and sadistic as something like Restraining Spongebob or Smoothe Jazz in Bikini Bottom. Second of all, while SB and Pat’s obliviousness annoyed the heck out of me, at least they were TRYING to be nice and take care of ‘Smelly’. And I liked that they went out of their way to free Squidward from the zoo.
Now, I do think it DOES actually deserve some kind of placement on this list, but if I were to place it here, I would probably place it in the 25-23 section. Bottom line is, while I’m not very fond of this episode, I don’t think it’s really one of the most despicable of the series.
This episode, however, I’m not afraid to say that yes, this is truly agreeable. I see it on quite a few members’ bottom 30, let alone 50, and I can definitely see why.
Basically, Mr. Krabs’ old fry cook, Jim, visits the Krusty Krab as part of a trip through Memory Lane! He, Squidward, and Krabs reminisce the good times when Jim worked at the Krusty Krab, and it seemed really fancy back then.
Spongebob doesn’t seem so interested in Jim until he tries one of his Krabby Patties, which proves to be as amazing as people say it is. And because of this, Spongebob asks Jim to teach him how to make a Krabby Patty, the way HE did it when he worked here.
Jim tries to teach Spongebob, but it seems that Spongebob can’t seemingly make a patty as good as him. This scene kind of bugged me because I thought it was kind of mean for Jim to criticize Spongebob like that. At one point, Jim throws one of Spongebob’s patties down the toilet because it had ‘too much’ mustard. Uhh… What if it comes out BETTER with mustard? He didn’t even try the patty! And at another point, he criticizes Spongebob’s patty for having pickles slices that were too thick. What the heck? I realize he’s trying to give him lessons, but does he really have to be so harsh?
And since Spongebob can’t seem to live up to Jim, he gets upset at the thought that he may not be good enough for the Krusty Krab. But that’s not even the worst part. THIS is.
Mr. Krabs starts to acknowledge Jim even more than Spongebob and he treats him better than Spongey. Heck, he even praises him like Spongebob’s not there! At one point, Mr. Krabs just knocks Spongebob’s employee of the month pictures off the wall to reveal Jim’s best employee ever award. At another point, Spongebob tries to get Krabs to at least acknowledge him:
·
Mr. Krabs: Aye, you always knew how to make me laugh. You just don't find employees like that anymore.
·
SpongeBob: Yeah. Not unless you look RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU!!!
·
Mr. Krabs: [Gasps] You're right, boy. I appreciate you, Squidward!
What? Really? YOU PICK SQUIDWARD OVER SPONGEBOB?? SQUIDWARD, THE LAZIEST EMPLOYEE IN THE WORLD, OVER SPONGEBOB, THE BEST EMPLOYEE IN THE WORLD WHO IS
LOYAL TO HIS BOSS AND FAITHFUL AND HARD-WORKING IN HIS JOB?!?!?
I—just—I don’t understand. Just— how? How is Squidward—SQUIDWARD—better than Spongebob at working at the KK? I mean, what kind of sense does that make? I’ll admit, Squidward’s sarcastic reaction is funny, but I don’t understand how Krabs can possibly choose Squiddy over Spongebob.
Spongebob gets miserable, and he decides to resign because he thinks he’s worthless.
SpongeBob: The Krusty Krab deserves better than my meager skills. I should be professional. I must... resign.
[He clicks his spatula like a pen, and starts writing on a roll of toilet paper] "Dear Mr. Krabs,"
Oh my god. You know, this episode, at its core, is a Spongebob Torture Fest. Spongebob is trying his hardest to be a good fry cook and be like Jim and what does he get? His new idol to criticize him harshly and his own boss to not even acknowledge him as a good employee? I honestly became extremely upset when Spongebob decided to resign. It’s upsetting to see Spongebob so horribly mistreated and miserable because of it.
Soon, Mr. Krabs and Jim find out that Spongebob is planning to resign and give the job to Jim, and when Spongebob comes into the kitchen, he tells them that he’s not worthy of working in the Krusty Krab. Jim tells Spongebob that he quit mainly because Mr. Krabs is an unfair, greedy jerk. He tried to get a raise because things were going badly, but since Krabs just laughed hysterically at the idea of a raise, Jim just quit right then and there. He actually had the right idea to quit the KK because Mr. Krabs is just a cheap, selfish jerk who never really cares about his employees (or their health). And when looking at episodes like Graveyard Shift, Squid on Strike, Spongebob You’re Fired, Born Again Krabs, etc., it’s hard not to side with Jim here.
Jim tells Spongebob that he thinks that the Krusty Krab is a dump, and he hopes that Spongebob will grow to do something better with his life, and then Jim leaves to continue his currently successful life.
·
Jim: Well, Eugene, looks like you've got yourself another sucker. The kid's a good fry cook, but he'll only be a great fry cook when he finally gets the guts to quit this dump. Good luck, SpongeBob. You're gonna need it. [Jim leaves the Krusty Krab]
·
SpongeBob: The Krusty Krab isn't a dump.
·
Mr. Krabs: Oh, she's a dump, alright. But she's my dump.
·
SpongeBob: Oh.
*sigh* If only Spongebob would quit his job and do something greater than work for that ungrateful red cheapskate. I don’t necessarily hate this episode, but honestly, I cannot bring myself to like it. It’s just too upsetting throughout, and while the ending was okay, it’s not enough to bring the score up.
Hint for Number 13: Its sister episode may make your eyes bleed, but THIS next episode may make your ears bleed!
