SpongeBob was always supposed to be colorful, the only reason it wasn't as much then was because of cel animation, and scans.

The Simpsons had a very gradual transition from cel to digital. SpongeBob didn’t, as season 1 looks older than it actually is

I guess as the pilot episode they have to be as perfect and accurate as possible to set the foundation for future episodes

In The Simpsons's season 34, when they tried to mimic season 1 episode 1's art style, it looked more like a Teen Season episode rather then Cel Animation, probably because those also were trying to replicate Cel Animation.

Yeah I was going to post that on here but I used the Help Wanted one instead, Was this initially scheduled to be a MarkerBob episode?
Because in the actual episode they had the Season 2 model ready.

Idk, spongebob looks like the s2 model in the patchy sequence, maybe they only used the model for the actual episode

Looking at it carefully, i think it looks similar to the old model, but they were used to draw the new model sheet so it looks like a hybrid. Maybe that's the reason why Christmas Who? is a Cubebob episode, it's just a Season 1 model knock-off

Oddly enough it looks like it’s based on cubebob. Which is the least common art style in the series.

Is it me or the art styles in season 1 were harder to tell apart? That is due to traditional cel animation.

I wonder if someone will ever make an accurate image comparing the styles of every season. Every time when someone makes a list comparing the styles over the years, is always innacurate for the earlier seasons, because they only took shots from a season start or a random episode

They seem to ignore the fact that there were several art styles running alongside each other, especially during the earlier seasons which makes the evolution non linear.

I'd say that it needs the trapezoid shape more pronounced, but he looks like that at some moments of the episode

Those earlier art evolution charts are inaccurate to the art styles that the users in this thread are currently discussing now.
