Visual Artifacts Found in SpongeBob

Anyone else think that the Nasty Patty/Idiot Box were made before The Bully & Just One Bite. The latter was made earlier, but it's the first episode to lack the VHS effect. I also think that the reason why half of season 1 doesn't have the visual artifacts is because nick was probably able to re scan the film reels. Plus, they didn't have to worry about the transferring of electronic colors, season 1 is basically stop-motion because the colors are made from store bough paint. Anything from season 1 that does have the VHS effect may as well be from a rotten tape.

You know, I think the first episode done and edited completely digital was "Whatever Happened to SpongeBob", this being the first episode that begins with going straight to the title card (no fade in) and ending with smash to black (the previous episodes, the last is "SpongeHenge", began and ended with fades).

I thought As Seen on TV was the first Season 3 episode segment in internal order, made during Season 2.

I read somewhere that production on season 3 was complete in February 2002. It looks like My Pretty Seahorse was the last episode to have the VHS effect
Season 4 on the other hand, actually had a few episodes produced in mid-to-late 2004. Wierd how part of season 4 was made before the movie came out

Just because ToonBoom supports vector graphics, doesn't mean they used them on the show for those episodes unless you can find proof that they did use vectors in there. ToonBoom also can be used with bitmap graphics too.

True, I do need proof of that.

Here are some schreenshots I took of the animation in the "Behind the Pantis" and "Square Roots: The Story of SpongeBob SquarePants" on YouTube. The former video is lower quality however than the latter.

The characthers look pretty crisp as they are zoomed in, especially Plankton in the last 3 pictures, but I don't really know if it's vector or bitmap/raster. Patrick in the second image is zoomed in on, and looks crisp as well, and I don't see blurry pixels, but sharper edges as they zoom, so I think they might have used vector graphics for the drawings, and raster for the backgrounds possibly, but I can't say for sure.

Chum Fricassee with dot crawl on Nickelodeon Greece

oh wait there's a worse part, I discovered on that channel that ALL of Seasons 3-8 have the VHS effect in Greece.

It's so odd how Arrgh! has no VHS effect yet What Ever Happened To SpongeBob? has a hard to notice dot crawl on Nickelodeon Greece.

Fun fact about Chum Fricassee; it was the last time we ever saw a new SpongeBob episode in standard definition, according to the broadcast order. Weird how an episode that's less than a decade old, has the VHS effect. The VHS effect here was barley noticeable, it doesn't look abysmal like it would from an episode from the second season.

Anyone else notice how the shows animation hasn't changed much since, late-season 4. The difference between Season 2 and Season 4, is way more drastic than Season 4 vs now.

Look:

Here's season 2 & 3:

Here's season 4:

Here's now (Season 11):

I don't think season 2 & 3 used a vector based software, look at how jagged the outlines were before they switched to Toon Boom

Jeez, I get that this was done in 2006, but if they animated Atlantis with those dinosaurs, Neptune knows what primative technology they animated season 2 with.

they brought back actual picture linking?

I think they did.

I've also noticed that for some reason, the holdover episodes from season 8 have bad pixelation (This is important to take note of, since these were the final episodes of Spongebob to be produced in SDTV)

Here's Super Evil Aquatic Villain Team Up is Go:

168.png

The pixelation is really bad in Chum Fricassee:

Pay attention to the colonel's outfit:

Could it be possible that these episode may have overlapped production with season 9, but they were SD cropped to keep season 8's aspect ratio consistent. The Good Krabby Name & Move it or Lose It don't have the pixelation issue, they look like normal season eight episodes.

noticing that even the non-USA transfers appear to have that dim issue in Chum Fricassee, it might be an animation error that's hard rubbed into the raw masters.

now I wonder if you can find a stream of Nickelodeon Australia and could see their transfer quality of all of their episodes from Seasons 1-11 (especially Seasons 1-5, although even Season 6 comes to mind when you know the Viking Sized Adventures DVD has PaleBob on all of it's episodes). You could get screenshots of the intro title card (because i'm doing research on exactly which episodes had the Nickelodeon flag outside the USA and which episodes had the 2009 logo for also doing research on the subject of Nickelodeon logos added to intros on international prints of Nickelodeon shows). episode title cards, screenshots from the episodes (specifically where there's stuff like SpongeBob's employee hat or a orange flower cloud that's subject to CRT artifacts), and maybe even the United Plankton Pictures and Nickelodeon Productions/Nickelodeon Animation Studios logos at the end credits. I know it's a hard job but Viacom International's transfers are amazing after all.

well I am wondering if you can find a Nickelodeon Australia livestream (at least one that's available in the USA) for this.

I don't think any Season 3 episode has the VHS effect on The Complete Third Season DVD release.

I kind of like the brown filter on Procrastination & I'm With Stupid, it makes the episode look nostalgic. I remember when I was little, when the episode would come on I would say "Dang, this is an old episode!" Anyone know why the brown filter was added, Just One Bite had a deleted scene, and it looks normal. Any word from nick about the rotten tapes. I also find it weird that Just One Bite aired a few weeks before Procrastination & I'm With Stupid, But Just One Bite looks at least a decade newer.

I think it has to be that maybe Nick damaged the tape when they were making the deleted sence version of the episode, and I think that since the tape might have been damaged, the colors were affected.

Nick has a clean copy. The episode now looks like it's from 2001, rather than from the mid-1980s. I think someone posted this already.

I also wonder when they stopped recording episodes from tape, I'm thinking around season 4
