Visual Artifacts Found in SpongeBob

You need a new TV, it looks like the blue tube is shot. CRT TVs get really bad color when they age
well that's an in-between blur shot with one of Blandy's lawyers, but the "SHOES", you're right.

If only I have an unused CRT TV set

SpongeGuard on Duty has no dot crawl on The Complete Third Season DVD

Missing Identity with dot crawl in the original airing (then again this might be due to the person screening this encoding on a CRT TV set as the onscreen bug doesn't look that great in shape either, nevermind that I discovered that the rip on another post has no dot crawl from what I see and the rainbow artifacts are obviously from the VHS recording itself)

a print of Wet Painters with dot crawl exists

episodes with bad transferring on Nickelodeon/Nicktoons USA airings (WIP):
Jellyfishing/Plankton! (alternating dot crawl and CRT artifacts every quarter second)
Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy/Pickles (blur artifacts)
Hall Monitor/Jellyfish Jam (alternating dot crawl every quarter second)
Sandy's Rocket/Squeaky Boots (they look noticeably dim, especially in the intro.)
Nature Pants/Opposite Day (dot crawl/CRT artifacts and oversaturation)
Culture Shock/F.U.N. (oversaturation)
MuscleBob BuffPants/Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost (looking somewhat dim in the intro (no dot crawl though)
The Chaperone/Employee of the Month (the entire episode having conspicuous film grain, 2 separate black frames when SpongeBob gets the mustard out in the former, both episodes looking degraded in color, etc.)
Scaredy Pants/I Was a Teenage Gary (dot crawl/CRT artifacts, oversaturation)
SB-129/Karate Choppers (dot crawl/CRT artifacts, oversaturation)
Sleepy Time/Suds (dot crawl/CRT artifacts)
Valentine's Day/The Paper (dot crawl/CRT artifacts IIRC)
Arrgh!/Rock Bottom (dot crawl/CRT artifacts)
Your Shoe's Untied/Squid's Day Off (dot crawl/CRT artifacts)
Something Smells/Bossy Boots (dot crawl/CRT artifacts)
Big Pink Loser/Bubble Buddy (dot crawl/CRT artifacts)
Dying for Pie/Imitation Krabs (dot crawl/CRT artifacts so bad that every time SpongeBob checks off his list in the former, it glitches out and folds over itself)
Wormy/Patty Hype (noticeable green tint, especially in the intro, and alternating dot crawl and CRT artifacts every quarter second)
Grandma's Kisses/Squidville (slight greenish tint (not sure about the dot crawl though as I have a CRT TV screen)
Prehibernation Week/Life of Crime (dot crawl/CRT artifacts)
Christmas Who? (dot crawl/CRT artifacts for the entire episode and not just the Patchy scenes)
Survival of the Idiots/Dumped (dot crawl/CRT artifacts, and a noticeable blur artifact (weird how on Nicktoons it's less noticeable))
No Free Rides/I'm Your Biggest Fanatic (dot crawl/CRT artifacts)
Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III/Squirrel Jokes (dot crawl/CRT artifacts)
Pressure/The Smoking Peanut (dot crawl/CRT artifacts)
Shanghaied/Gary Takes a Bath (dot crawl/CRT artifacts, palebob in the latter)
Welcome to the Chum Bucket/Frankendoodle (dot crawl/CRT artifacts, it especially gets bad in the latter, so bad that it honestly has to be the worst example of them all. Also goldenbob in the latter but that's pretty much an animation error as it's even in the international transfers)
The Secret Box/Band Geeks (dot crawl/CRT artifacts, bad color calibration to the point where the sky looks over saturated and SpongeBob is a normal shade of yellow rather than the goldenbob he originally was in these episodes.)
Graveyard Shift/Krusty Love (dot crawl/CRT artifacts, including goldenbob (animation error and not just bad transferring) and really bad CRT in the latter)
Procrastination/I’m with Stupid (dot crawl/CRT artifacts, an awful brown filter added in May 2005-present airings ever since they cut out that whole 1+ minute worth of scenes in the former just so people could tell it was the cut version. Infact they now look so bad they look like they got a comb filter from the 1980's)
Sailor Mouth/Artist Unknown (dot crawl/CRT artifacts, greenish tint in the former and palebob in the latter)
Jellyfish Hunter/The Fry Cook Games (dot crawl/CRT artifacts (really bad here))
Squid on Strike/Sandy, SpongeBob, and the Worm (dot crawl/CRT artifacts, palebob)
The Algae’s Always Greener/SpongeGuard on Duty (dot crawl/CRT artifacts (really bad here too)
Club SpongeBob/My Pretty Seahorse (dot crawl/CRT artifacts)
Nasty Patty/Idiot Box (dot crawl/CRT artifacts)
not counting Fear of a Krabby Patty/Shell of a Man, The Lost Mattress/Krabs vs. Plankton, Skill Crane/Good Neighbors, Enemy In-Law/Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy VI: The Motion Picture having palebob because they were made that way and even the international transfers have them. (they look clean though)
Have You Seen This Snail? (dot crawl/CRT artifacts in some scenes)
The Original Fry Cook/Night Light (dot crawl/CRT artifacts)
The Monster Who Came To Bikini Bottom/ Welcome to the Bikini Bottom Triangle (palebob and blur artifacts)
The Curse of the Hex/The Main Drain (palebob and blur artifacts)
Trenchbillies/Sponge-Cano! (palebob and blur artifacts)
The Abrasive Side/Earworm (palebob) (odd how Nicktoons doesn’t have palebob)
Super Evil Aquatic Villain Team Up is Go!/Chum Fricassee (noticeable dimming filter (still not as bad as the Season 8 DVD, and non-USA transfers don't have as bad of a dim issue (from what I saw on Nickelodeon Sweden)))
The Good Krabby Name/Move It or Lose It (the former has no issue but the latter appears noticeably dim)
pretty much every HD episode (especially Season 9a) (oversaturation, because the non-USA transfers don't look as painfully oversaturated)

And Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy/Pickles on Nickelodoen airings has the same problem as Survival of the Idiots/Dumped, which is the blur artifact.

Added.

Did you remember if Valentine's Day/The Paper on it's most recent airing have the VHS effect or not?

Those episodes from what I remember don't look too bad, but it's been about 8 months since they aired on the station.

OK then i'll remove them. No dot crawl right? Also MuscleBob BuffPants/Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost don't seem to have dot crawl and they just look dim in the intro (slightly dimmer than in non-USA transfers which already are slightly dim)

I think they have dot crawl, but not anywhere near as bad as other episodes like Procrastination/I'm with Stupid.

Who here has seen early airing of pre-movie Spongebob, I wanna know if they still had the same electronic artifacts

*Your Shoes Untied & Squids Day Off also have the VHS effect, scratch that, every episode in season 2 has the VHS effect

*I think the episode Just One Bite was the first episode to be digitally transferred, since after that episode we don't see a bad signal for a while, I think nick screwed up the production codes, and Nasty Patty was made first

*Some episodes in the later part of season 1 have clean copies

*Frankendoodle, Secret Box, and Band Geeks have golden bob

*Sailor Mouth has the greenish tint, and Artist Unknown has pale bob

*Sailor Mouth also has the green tint

*Krusty Love also has golden bob, and extremely bad CRT effects

*Procrastination/I'm With Stupid look so bad, it looks like they have a comb filter from the 1980s.

*Correct me if I'm wrong but 20,000 Patties Under the Sea had dot crawl in a few airings

*Every episode in the first half of season 4 has pale bob except for Selling Out & Funny Pants, but the episodes themselves are clean

*The season 8 holdovers look really dim (Chum Fricassee, Super Evil Aquatic Villan Team Up is Go, and Move it or Lose It)

I found a video from Nick Animation's YouTube channel, and it's talking about how they make their cartoons, and at the 3:37 mark, they show some frames of the episode 'Mooncation', and the animation software is most likely Toon Boom (Not Flash), so I think they still have all thier original scene files for all the digital episodes (Seasons 2-8), that means they could re render them in 4:3 1080p, AKA 1440x1080p and rescan all the live action footage or Patchy scenes, and rescan Season 1 with the original camera negatives, therefore making them artifact-less, without changing a single thing but the image quality. For some reason the DVD versions of the older episodes (mainly Season 3) has white edge halos and other odd artifacts like dot crawl (of course), which I'm sure isn't present in the animation softwares and only on TV, DVD, etc. Toon Boom (Seasons 4- present) and Toonz (Seasons 2 & 3) are vector based programs, so you can zoom into the drawings to as much as you want, (like the characters and props they colored/inked or drew in the programs) and they would look very very crisp and not lose any quality at all. Even zoomed in at 10000%, they would still look great, as they are svg images. As for the backgrounds, they also have edge halos and strange artifacts in DVD versions. In the show, they scan the paintings and make cleanups to them, and I am sure they were scanned as TIFFS/JPEGS, at least in 1080p or higher (or a certain DPI as scanners use DPI and not PPI) as Nick has archives of art in very high quality as 4K, 1080p, etc, but they were screened at 480p. South Park was re-rendered at 1080p, so SpongeBob definitley can too, just as long as they have those elements together. Doing this will make the show more crisp and make artifacts non-existent or unnoticeable.

Here's an example of an SVG, and you will see, it won't get blurry as you zoom in, unlike PNGS, JPEGS, TIFFS etc.

Just because ToonBoom supports vector graphics, doesn't mean they used them on the show for those episodes unless you can find proof that they did use vectors in there. ToonBoom also can be used with bitmap graphics too.

Anyone notice how the first half of season 2 looks newer and cleaner than the second half. In Your Shoe's Untied the colors are nice and bight and clean, but they look all mudddy and ::dolphin noise::ey in episodes like Band Geeks and The Secret Book. The VHS effect is also really bad in the second half of season 2. Frankendoodle being all gold and brown. Other 90s nicktoons also have the VHS effect, like Rugrats, Arnold, and Ren & Stimpy.

Who else notices that episodes like Krusty Krab Training Video/Wet Painters are over-saturated on Amazon and iTunes releases, but look normal on DVD and television? The same goes for some other Season 3 episodes. Too much color calibration maybe?

I think it's mostly bad transfers that make the VHS effect more noticeable in later Season 2 episodes than earlier ones.

Every episode in season 3 that does't have the VHS effect, looks over saturated. Spongegaurd on Duty, however looks pretty bad, it looks like it has a comb filter from the 1980s.

I do notice. But what's funny is that Hey Arnold, Rugrats, and The Ren and Stimpy Show exist without the VHS effect literally everywhere outside the USA. Same can be said for SpongeBob in Seasons 1-8
now I wonder who has the following DVDs

Nautical Nonsense and Sponge Buddies
Halloween
Sea Stories
Tales from the Deep
Lost at Sea
Tide and Seek
Christmas
The Seascape Capers
SpongeBob Goes Prehistoric
SpongeGuard on Duty
Sponge For Hire
Home Sweet Pineapple
Fear of a Krabby Patty

and if anyone can compare their quality to the quality of the episodes on The Complete First, Second, and Third Season DVDs.

Look at how bad the VHS effect is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZWn0UMTo74

I found a copy of the original airing for The Algea's Always Greener & Spongegaurd on Duty. The tape must've been left sitting in somebody's basement for too long, it's so faded, I can't tell whether or not these episodes had visual artifacts in their original airing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2LEdNmNMHs

It looks like somebody somehow snagged a clean copy of The Algea's Always Greener
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3iS2ciFIRY

I like how it's not over saturated like the non-VHS episodes of season three

I can actually tell as I look closely at the red parts and there is no dot crawl (the dot crawl would look even thicker and more noticeable on that VHS recording if the transfer had dot crawl)
