Season 5-

2006- Friend or Foe, The Original Fry Cook, Night Light, Rise and Shine, Waiting, Fungus Among Us, Spy Buddies, Boat Smarts, Good 'Ol Whathisname, New Digs, Krabs a la Mode, Roller Cowards, Bucket Sweet Bucket, To Love a Patty, Breath of Fresh Squidward, Money Talks, SpongeBob vs. The Patty Gadget, Slimy Dancing, The Krusty Sponge, Sing a Song of Patrick, A Flea in Her Dome, Donut of Shame, Krusty Plate, Goo Goo Gas, Le Big Switch, Atlantis SquarePantis, Stanley S. SquarePants

2007- Picture Day, Pat No Pay, Blackjack, Blackened Sponge, Mermaidman vs. SpongeBob, The Inmates of Summer, To Save a Squirrel, Pest of the West; 20,000 Patties Under the Sea, The Battle of Bikini Bottom, The Two Faces of Squidward, SpongeHenge, Banned in Bikini Bottom

(The second half of season 5 looks cleaner and the outlines become thinner, that's what makes the later episodes look 2007 as opposed to '06) Stanley S. SquarePants looks rougher than the other episodes in the second half of the season.

Season 6- Most of the season looks 2008

2009- Sand Castles in the Sand, Pineapple Fever, Chum Caverns, Clash of Triton

2010- Truth or Square

Season 7/8- Everything Pre-Legends looks 2009, post Legends and the entire 8th season (minus It's a SpongeBob Christmas, which looks 2011) up to Hello Bikini Bottom look 2010.

2011- Extreme Spots (the outlines are very rough in this episode due to it being the first regular length HD episode, which make it look like it's from 2011)

2012- The rest of 9A up to SpongeBob You're Fired looks 2012

2014- Lost in Bikini Bottom, Tutor Sauce, Squid Plus One, The Executive Treatment, Company Picnic, Pull Up a Barrel, Sanctuary, What's Eating Patrick, Patrick the Game, The Sewers of Bikini Bottom

2015- SpongeBob LongPants, Larry's Gym, The Fishbowl, Married to Money, Mall Girl Pearl, Two Thumbs Down, Sharks vs. Pods, CopyBob DittoPants

2016- Sold, Lame and Fortune, Goodbye Krabby Patty, Sandy's Nutmare, Bulletin Board, Food Con Castaways, Snail Mail, Pineapple Invasion, Salsa Imbecilicus, Mutiny on the Krusty, The Whole Tooth

Season 10 also looks like it's from 2016

Season 11-13 look 2017

Season 14 looks 2018, the outlines are cleaner and the colors are brighter than S11-S13

If I were to change anything about this, I'd put any Season 2 episode that has M-Eyebrow Patrick in 1997 to 1998 with the only outlier(s) being MM&BB 3 (and Patty Hype if counting its Season 1 esk credits)...

Big Pink Loser looks 1999 because it’s digital ink and paint, despite having Patrick’s M shaped eyebrows

I can see where you're coming from...

I should clarify MM&BB 3 though: the episode is mostly in dark shade due to it taking place in the Mermalair - and because of that, the episode looks like it could pass off as a Season 1 episode (if it only takes place there, not outside of the lair).

Maybe it started animation production before the others, and as a result had to go off by the latest model sheets at the time which had season one character designs...
If you haven't seen this, it's referring to Big Pink Loser and how I think it could have been the first to go into animation production before the rest of the other Season 2 episodes did, and as a result is the reason why Patrick has M-Eyebrows throughout the entire episode...

It looks 1999 because of the dot crawl. To me it looks like very very early digital animation since it lacks the grain as well as the wobbly cels and cue dots that season 1 has.

I didn’t include shorts on this list;

1998 -Nicktoons Summer Splash, Nicktoons Sweepstakes Commercial

2000- Chocolate Milk Advertisment

2002- Craft Mac and Cheese (Has the same markerbob as Pranks a Lot)

2003- SpongeBob Movie Burger King Ads

2004- KCA Short # 1

2005- Eggo commercial and Around the World short

2006- Best Day Ever Shorts and Atlantis Shorts

2008- Truth or Square Shorts, they were all 4:3 unlike the special

2009- Clash of Triton shorts

2010- Legends of Bikini Bottom shorts and Sandy’s Vacation in Ruins, final 4:3 shorts

2017- Both HD KCA blimp shorts (one was traditionally animated and the other was puppet rigged)

2018- Movie Theater Etiquette Short (looks cleaner than the rest of S11-S13)

My guess as to why that happened is likely because that episode began production while season 1 was still being worked on but it wasn’t in the animation stage until other episodes from season 2 began production. Patrick likely had M shaped eyebrows in the animatics and the animators at rough draft went from there……

Would also make sense for Your Shoe's Untied, except by the time they animated Ween's song number - they were able to draw out Patrick with his Z-Eyebrows.

Episodes with normal animation used the updated model sheets. Markerbob episodes in the early stages used the season 1 model sheets, that could explain why SpongeBob’s head was trapezoid shaped in markerbob episodes.

It could also explain why Patrick’s M shaped eyebrows were present during the entire episode in Big Pink Loser, while his eyebrows in Your Shoes Untied were Z shaped for at least a small portion of the episode. However, although Squids Day Off had normal animation, his eyebrows were M shaped during the entire episode.

I would at least like to think that by the time Nick greenlight the show for it's 2nd Season, it was when Season 1 was beginning to air more episodes and had probably finished its production around that time...

Technology wasn’t as good back then so episodes took longer to produce. Episodes were stored optically. Nowadays episodes can have storyboards that are emailed to rough draft and get sent back virtually. Season 1 was probably still in production by the time the show got renewed

Here’s my theory on the production of ‘Help Wanted’:

December 1996 - After the cancellation of Rocko’s Modern Life, the first revision of the SpongeBob series bible is created. At the time, the series was still called SpongeBoy Ahoy!.

17 January 1997 - The second revision of the series bible is created, and it contains rough versions of ‘Jellyfishing’, ‘Reef Blower’, ‘Squeaky Boots’, ‘Bubblestand’ and ‘Employee of the Month’.

February 1997 - The third revision of the series bible is created.

March 1997 - The script for the pilot episode is written.

April 1997 - The rough storyboard for the pilot episode is created.

May 1997 - The voice acting for the pilot episode is recorded.

3 June 1997 - The final storyboard for the pilot episode is created.

July-October 1997 - The pilot was being animated during this time period.

November 1997 - The main character’s name is changed to SpongeBob.

December 1997 - The original 1997 version of the pilot episode is completed.

March 1999 - The revised 1999 version of the pilot episode is completed.

My theory is that they stopped using Toonz after season 5, and that they switched to Toon Boom in season 6.

How come the difference from pre movie to post movie is far more drastic than the difference between season 5 and 6?

We still don’t know why markerbob was axed after 2002.

They probably switched to more modern computers which ran versions of Toonz with vector graphics support.

Toonz 4.5 was the first vector-based version of Toonz, and it was released in 2001:

It’s also the first version to have a pallet extraction tool. That explains why the colors in season 4-5 are far more consistent than they were in pre movie. Season 5 was the first season where SpongeBob was the same shade of yellow in every single episode.
