Popeye's Top 30 Worst SpongeBob Episodes Ever (with some honorable mentions)

TrenchBillies is the second worst legend behind Sponge-Cano!.
I don't like either one but at least Sponge-Cano actually had some potential to be a great episode. That's why I put it much lower on this list.

Now that I'm in the mood, I feel like continuing my list. Probably won't be doing this every other day since I'm doing other stuff but I didn't want to let my thread go by the wayside so here's #13!

Yikes! The rating for this one is lower than a lot of the other ones on my list. Let's see what makes this episode so heinous and bad, shall we?

Anyway, the episode starts out with Mrs. Puff letting everyone out of Boating School and SpongeBob overdramatically has a note for Mrs. Puff. This can't be good already. He already comes across as a very unlikable character that no one and I mean no one wants to be around. I feel bad for Mrs. Puff here that she has to deal with this Yellow Dennis the Menace like creature. Mrs. Puff understandably wants to get away from him and drives off in her boat. You can literally see the sweat coming out of her as SpongeBob runs towards her and the boat.

(Hint: One of my least favorite episodes ever which WILL be on this countdown has a scene just like this)

Seems that she finally got away from this guy but out of nowhere, SpongeBob pops out of the boat just to give Mrs. Puff a note. Just......why? This feels like his behavior in "Squid Wood" but even worse and I know there are other episodes where he's characterized in a really creepy, uncomfortable way that I want to talk about more here and probably will add as honorable mentions if they don't make it onto my countdown.

Mrs. Puff then tells SpongeBob that he should take a hint and tries to get him off the boat but the little guy just won't let go of the boat. Even Mrs. Puff starts to become a bit unlikable after she sarcastically says she wants to help SpongeBob. So not only is this scene drag out for way too long but nothing's funny and both SpongeBob and Mrs. Puff are unlikable in this episode. Their characterizations are both way off and not funny.

She gets blinded with SpongeBob's note and crashes into the Krusty Krab and basically Mrs. Puff and Mr. Krabs try to work out a deal so she won't get in trouble with her parol officer over what just happened. During the conversation, they sort of make a reference to the (much better and funnier) episode "Krusty Love." I think I would give the writers some credit for that but then they just completely do away with that entirely and make it seem like Mrs. Puff and Krabs never dated at all! I know this show has very loose continuity but that doesn't mean that even details like that should be shrugged off for no reason. At least have some build up or a backstory to explain to the audience why Kruff never worked out. I think that's one of the main things that really made this episode worthy enough to be Top 20 material. It was just a really underdone scene that had so much potential to be good.

Mr. Krabs comes up with the idea of having Mrs. Puff work at the Krusty Krab, taking Squidward's place and having to work with the Sponge. Oh no, this isn't gonna be fun to watch. I just know it! The characters all continue to act like jerks to each other and rub their jerkiness into the audience's face. SpongeBob being unlikable and annoying isn't helping with that either. He becomes an even bigger jerk when he decides to "teach" Mrs. Puff the ropes of being a fry cook at a fast food restaurant, something that I think most people with a little bit of training can do anyway. SpongeBob's job really isn't that special so therefore, the plot of this doesn't even make any sense either. I also hate how SpongeBob keeps laughing and giggling. I love SpongeBob and all but he is really starting to annoy me in this episode. Kinda wish something would happen to him at the end of the episode. Don't panic, maybe he will get his comeuppance somewhere in this episode.....or not....

(Why does this eerily remind me of "Someone's in the Kitchen With Sandy?" I swear part of this episode feels just like it except that you get rid of Plankton and Sandy and replace them with Mrs. Puff. Same team of writers too, except that was a Dani Michaeli premise. I really think everyone was running out of ideas at this point and honestly I wouldn't blame them. The show had been on for about 11 years or so at this point)

Just like in "Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy," we get long boring scenes that aren't funny and mainly revolve around SpongeBob teaching Mrs. Puff how to take orders like Squidward. At least in that episode, SpongeBob was still kinda likeable even though the scenes with him were boring as hell. This is the same thing except SpongeBob is just gloating like a ::dolphin noise:: all throughout and it just makes me want to stop watching. I don't like it when SpongeBob's acting like a jerk for no reason like this.

And just like with that episode, the pacing is absolutely glacial. It takes FOREVER to go from Point A to B in this episode and it seems to be a common problem with a lot of episodes that have made it onto my list thus far. SpongeBob dresses up as a customer and Mrs. Puff practices taking orders. I honestly think this is the most interesting scene in the entire episode and not even this is that good anyway or worth seeing the episode for. Kinda reminds me of "Krusty Dogs" when SpongeBob dressed up as something else. Curse these recycled gags.

Just like the audience, Mrs. Puff is getting increasingly annoyed and upset with SpongeBob and she takes orders from a real customer. SpongeBob continues to act really annoying without anything being funny. Mrs. Puff randomly trips on a barrel while bringing the order to one of the customers. We get another really boring, over the top, unfunny scene and they somehow end up on the Krusty Krab's ceiling and then fall down and the patty somehow ends up on the customer's plate. Mrs. Puff gets so infuriated and pissed off that she puffs up and bounces out of the Krusty Krab to her boat and tears up the note that SpongeBob gave her.

A police officer sees that Mrs. Puff threw the note onto the ground and arrests her for littering. Mrs. Puff is actually happy when she hears what will happen to her because she thinks that she will finally get away from SpongeBob though I can't believe she didn't remember when SpongeBob and Patrick kept trying to get her out in "Doing Time." Continuity thrown out the window yet again. Figures. At least she will finally be happy right......WRONG.

Mrs. Puff has to take traffic school lessons in jail, which kinda doesn't make any sense, and guess who's teaching the courses? SpongeBob of all people and it turns out that the note he was trying to give her was basically explaining that he was going to follow in her footsteps to become a drivers ed teacher for the summer. I have no words for how incredibly stupid this ending is. I think it's one of the worst endings to an episode EVER and that and the many other things wrong with this episode really makes it worthy of having such a spot on my list. Terrible, terrible ending.

I never hated Summer Job because It had a few funny moments but I can't say I liked it either. It's nothing but a Mrs. Puff abuse episode and a Kruff killer. Usually Mrs. Puff abuse episodes like No Free Rides and Mrs. Puff You're Fired are really funny but not this one.

Sorry guys, I've been busy lately so I had to put this list on hold but I will keep adding more to it when I watch some more episodes and stuff.

I think if I were to redo part of the list, "Good Neighbors" would be #31 and "Tentacle Vision" and "Cephalopod Lodge" would tied at #30. They're really the same episode but there are certain elements that make the next two a little bit worse than the former. I really don't find any of them to be that bad or too heinous but yeah. All of them are around mediocre for me though they do have certain parts that I liked.

"Big Sister Sam" is now an honorable mention and I will probably do a short review of that episode here soon. I don't find it to be nearly as painful to watch as "Yours Mine and Mine" but it certainly did have its problems.

Here's the next episode on my countdown and oh boy, it's just plain wrong.

I finally found an episode that I dislike even more than "Summer Job" and combines the worst elements of "The Main Drain" and "Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy" and jam packs it with even more boring and painful filler! Shame because the same trio also managed to make "Whelk Attack" which I now believe is one of the best episodes in the season and doesn't have so many of the problems that this episode have, especially with the filler. Kinda weird how everyone in this season seems to be all over the place with the quality of the content they are putting out. On one hand, you can still have really good episodes like the one I mentioned and just really dreadful dreck like this in the same season. In Richard Pursel's case, he has shown that he can come up with some of the best premises in the post movie era like with "New Digs" but also some of the absolute worst like "A Pal for Gary" and "Trench Billies." It just doesn't make any sense unless someone was really hellbent on sucking out all the humor in certain episodes.

The episode starts out with the French narrator trying to do an epic opening to the episode and notices that he's just looking at a rock. Then we cut to SpongeBob and Patrick having a really long, drawn out, unfunny staring contest that makes the most boring scenes in "The Main Drain" look brilliant. Ugh! A bottle lands and it turns out that it's a note for Sandy. They go over to Sandy's treedome where the jokes start to get even lamer. I mean a book on how to open things? Why????????? That's not even remotely funny at all. Patrick spends time opening up the book and putting me to sleep. Even though there are some episodes that were on MoBrosStudios's video that I disagreed with, I can certainly see why this one was deserving to be on there.

Finally some action happens when Sandy comes out of the treedome just to kick Patrick's butt for no reason other than the fact that she thought they were trying to do a "ninja sneak attack" on them. The "squirrel fu" joke was just as stupid and lame as the previous scene. Sandy then reads the note and it's a letter from her twin brother Randy who doesn't even appear in the episode at all. What a waste. They could have just made the episode about Sandy visiting Randy on land or something like that but no. Anyway, Randy wants Sandy to come up and compete in the rodeo competition and again, the jokes that they use here fall flat really really badly and where we get a gross close up of a rotten Krabby Patty that was in Spongebob's ear. Yuck!

This episode takes a turn for the worst when out of nowhere, Sandy sings one of the most annoying songs I've ever heard on the show. It's quite a far cry from something as meaningful and excellent as the song she sang in "Texas." In fact, this whole episode feels like a version of that episode gone completely wrong. All it does is repeat the word "rodeo" over and over again and it just makes me want to throw my television out the window. At least the visuals seem okay but there's really not much else there to like about it. It's just being used to pad out the episode since there's nothing funny about it already.

Sandy blasts off onto land and SpongeBob and Patrick decide to copy the conflict in "Pressure" and the filler here really gets annoying. Even the characters are starting to talk as slowly and unfunny as possible. In fact, it feels if I didn't know what the title of the episode was, I would have thought the part with Patrick spinning around came from "The Main Drain." SpongeBob first goes to Mr. Krabs and tries to tell her about Sandy and he doesn't seem to care at all unless it's about money. Not good.

The same thing happens when he goes to Squidward and others for help. They don't even seem to remember or care about Sandy being gone at all. There is definitely a mean spirited tone about this part of the episode that just makes it even more uncomfortable to watch. The music in the background playing in each scene doesn't help either. Boring, boring and more boring! Not even Gary seems to care at all.

(Just.......no........I have nothing else to say about this scene)

Later that night, SpongeBob blows up some bubbles to get everyone in Bikini Bottom to go along with his plans to 'save' Sandy. If the townspeople weren't such jerks in this episode, I doubt he would have had to do that in the first place. Absolutely pointless.

Cartoon logic is then thrown out the window and they're suddenly over Texas where Sandy's riding a bullfrog. I will give this episode credit for the bringing back that photorealistic animation but that's all this part had going for it. It turns out that Sandy never needed to be saved and that the entire plot of this episode was for nothing. Wow. Just wow. 11 minutes of my time wasted.

Rodeo Daze is easily one of the worst episodes, it's just touches my bottom 10.

By the way, were The Main Drain and Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy lower on the list?

Yes but much the same, they are also Bottom 20 material as I explained in my summaries of them. In my opinion, this episode had even less going for it and more of a bore to sit through combined with being really annoying, really pointless and being really mean spirited at the same time.

So why is both the Main Drain and Yours Mine and Mine #16?

I checked and they aren't tied at all.

YMM is #16 and Main Drain is #15. "Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy" made it to #19. In the grand scheme of things, they really aren't that far behind in how much I dislike them. I think I might have accidentally had them tied when I first wrote about them but fixed it afterwards.
