Since widescreen HD became the standard, you can only determine the age of a show based of the line quality. Before it was based on the colors and overall image quality.
Technology has aged so much that nothing can look outdated any more. A 2008 show can look very different to a 2015 show, while a 2022 show looks indistinguishable to 2015 stuff. I wonder what's the next big step in television in terms of aspect ratio and image quality, if there is going to be any at all.

Season 8 could have been produced in open matte fullscreen, and cropped down to widescreen in subsequent HD airings.

I feel like Season 8 could have been produced in real Widescreen

You know, I think SpongeBob SquarePants should stop being traditionally animated, and should switch to being animated with either Adobe Animate (Flash), Toon Boom Harmony, or maybe both.
