I've been watching Spongebob since the beginning and I noticed that throughout the series there have been hints of Spongebob liking Squidward. Even in season 1, Spongebob was only willing to trade the paper to get Squidward naked and in the Christmas special, he wanted Squidward under the mistletoe.
Of course, in later seasons it's only gotten more blatant. Spongebob is utterly OBSESSED with Squidward now and everyone knows it. He's always trying to get in Squidward's bed/shower and he's always trying to date Squidward (Love That Squid and Squid Plus One). Like how many times have episodes ended with Squidward in Spongebob's bed (aka sleeping together)? How come Spongebob is always complimenting Squidward's appearance and being very touchy feely with him? Did we really need to see Spongebob spank Squidward with a spatula in Krabs a La Mode? Not really. But the writers must be doing this for a reason. It's the same reason Patrick and Spongebob aren't as close and Spongebob has no interest in Sandy, and Patrick's more of a jerk, which is making Spongebob wanna be with Squidward more. Squidbob is being shoved down our throats one episode at a time.
Now my problem is that before, you could even say it was just a running joke because Squidward would never return Spongebob's feelings. But now, it's like the writers are hinting that Squidward is going to be in love with Spongebob, too. In Love That Squid, Squidward already showed jealousy that Patrick was talking to Spongebob, and the fact that he even played along with the fake date was weird. Now with Squid Plus One, the writers are pretty much revealing that Squidward is gay because he did not even try to find a female date, instead going after a bunch of guys. And then Spongebob was so obviously jealous! The ep had the tone of a romantic comedy and romantic music even played when Squidward and Spongebob stared into each other eyes. It was weird. Finally, the episode just had to end with the gala wherein all the other couples are holding hands and Squidward finally accepts Spongebob and even shows up with him as the date! What!
Now, I don't mind having gay characters but to me it just seems OOC that Squidward would ever fall for Spongebob, ever, but the writers don't care, clearly. They are starting to make it happen. I think at the end Squidward and Spongebob will hook up (no matter how OOC it is) and they'll be co-owners of the Krusty Krab with Krabs retiring. The writers are already putting hints so that people won't say "oh it came out of nowhere" because Squidbob has been hinted at so many times. They're developing Squidbob (much to my displeasure) so that they can be called progressive when the series ends, and everyone will praise them for being diverse.
