Pinned thread Unpopular Opinions you Have on SpongeBob

The splinter isn't the worst episode EVER, it's maybe in the top 20, but not the worst. Might be because i'm not easily grossed out.

Here are two I got:

1. I find Squidward Torture to be overhated. I feel like the issue is that Squidward Tortue needs a bit of a catalyst in order to be justified and the later seasons either don't have that or have a weak one. Another issue could be that the torture is too much compared to what Squidward did. Squidward is sort of the show's punching bag to me because he's generally seen as a jerk, even if not portrayed in the episode in which torture is performed.

2. I find the Spongebob community to be way too reliant on Spongebob Youtubers in terms of opinions and culture. Even in 2024, I feel like the words from people like TheMysteriousMrEnter and Pieguyrulz are still being rippled throughout the community. I actually still like MrEnter (No, you don't have to bash me in the head with the stuff he's done), but I know to have a separate opinion from him. Just a small piece of advice in general: make your own opinion on things, not mimic the ones of influencers.

I think I'm more interested to see which episodes you think are worse
Most of the Squidward torture episodes, Squidward's one of my favorite characther so i get really MAD when he gets tortured for no reason at all. The episode where he reads spongebob's diary also makes me mad because spongebob released the diary and yet people still were mad on him even though they probably read the diary (it was a best seller). Sure the ending made squidward a jerk, but still i hate squidward torture episodes.

While season 4 is a great season (my personal favorite imo), it definitely is the start of a decline in quality of the series. I see a ton of people that don't understand that these statements CAN be true simultaneously. I absolutely love the comedy and (maybe unpopular) art style of season 4. However, it did start many problems that became much greater in the seasons after.

I agree. The only notable thing about The Splinter is the gross out. Otherwise, it's just boring, forgettable episode.

  • The Clash of Triton is a pretty good episode, I don't understand the hate for it. I wasn't bored at any point while watching it and enjoyed the soap opera feel it was going for. SpongeBob has always had such a great way of adapting more serious story concepts into the lighthearted tone of the show, and this episode demonstrated it well.
  • Band Geeks is an absolutely fantastic episode that I understand people calling the best of the series, even if it's not my personal favorite. I wouldn't consider it overrated.
  • I don't really know where people stand on this one, but I prefer Two Thumbs Down over its sister episode, Mall Girl Pearl. I really like MGP, but TTD is honestly one of the best of post-sequel in my opinion.
  • THE TOENAIL SCENE IS FUNNY

I like Plankton more when he's depicted as an "unserious" villain that you know will fail in the end of the episode. I don't like episodes where he tries to actually kill people, because that's not really something I think he should do. Especially "It's a SpongeBob Christmas"... it's a great episode and all, but Plankton wouldn't actually try to straight-up kill Santa. That's not something I would ever picture him doing. His main goal should be simply trying to steal the formula and that's it.

(I know that the SpongeBob writers may see him differently, but as for me... I'll just stick to making him a funny character without any really dark intentions.)

I see a few posts here have described that they don't really dislike The Splinter so I'm just going to add in my two cents in that I think I can understand why someone would be neutral towards it. Personally, I have a childhood memory of watching The Splinter on TV and I distinctly remember it being the first episode of SpongeBob that I not only didn't like but it also just made me want to actively look away from the screen because of how gross it was. So this experience probably makes my opinion of it more negative than it deserves, because if you can handle the gross out (unlike me, I HATE gross out) it's probably just a really meh episode.

I don't have an actual unpopular opinion to add to this thread because I don't think about SpongeBob that much nowadays, but I just wanted to join in on that discussion lol.

I wish SpongeBob acted less goofy in the newer seasons; it's extremely rare for him to get angry or logical now.

I personally love Kamp Koral. The idea of a "what if," for any previously canon world, allows a lot of room for writers to explore new ideas they wouldn't have been able to touch upon before. Despite the animation not being the best, it adds to a nice overall charm of the show that is goofy and loony.

I hate how mostly everyone in this show despises Spongebob,
this includes Karen, Mrs Puff, especially SQUIDWARD

Well the 1st movie had him enslave Bikini Bottom, and send an assassin/hitman after SpongeBob and Patrick. (Also Plankton was perfectly content with King Neptune killing Mr.Krabs too)

Only why Squidward despises SpongeBob the most is because Squidward is stuck with him, ends up being forced into his and Patrick's hijinks, sometimes gets his house destroyed, ends up losing what he loves in some sort of way to him, etc.

Yes can get that some of it is justified especially in the Pre-Movie episodes, but when all Squidward wants to do is to have peace and quiet by himself - I can't really see any justification for the crap Squidward has to go through.

(I'm going through this one chronological)

#1: Yeah, The Clash of Triton is a pretty decent episode. I could probably see why some people wouldn't like this episode (primarily with how King Neptune is characterized here), but over it's a pretty good episode.

#2: When this episode had two Super Bowls dedicated to it, with the 2nd being done just because Sweet Victory wasn't performed correctly, and there's still people who say "It's not overrated it's iconic" well... No it's still overrated, I can get that this episode has a reputation for it being the first where Squidward ultimately wins but when it gets to a point where you see it everywhere, it gets tiring and annoying seeing parts of this episode over and over again.
This also goes for most of Pre-Movie too but even then, it's not to the point where this episode was ultimately the one that was chosen for the Super Bowl. (All this in my opinion but at the same time I'm still going to keep my word on it - Band Geeks is Overrated)

#3: I haven't really watched both of those episodes to give my opinion on them, so if anything, I'll just say ditto.

#4: I also have to agree, only because of how quick that scene went. After all, Squidward won in the end and its not like The Splinter where it drags out the gross out for 11 minutes. (Don't really mind that episode but I can see where people come from when regarding the gross out)

I just wanted to note that I stand by the idea that Band Geeks is kind of overrated for me too. It was amazing when it first aired, but after years of seeing everybody praise it, I just kind of grew tired and bored of it. It's still a great episode all around, if not one of the best, but I can't view it in the same light anymore like I used to. That's just my take on it though, kudos to though who still declare it as their favorite!
