All we know so far is that SpongeBob will "travel from his world to ours". That opens up a whole range of possibilities. I'd rule out a quest type plot, though (ie, going to the surface world to retrieve something) because they already did that in the first movie.

Also, whoever wrote that episode "SpongeHenge" did a terrible job. It's the worst SpongeBob episode I've ever seen.

His credits on IMDB for SpongeBob stop around 2011 so I'm not sure what he's doing nowadays. He's worked on a few Dreamworks movies fairly recently (again, up to 2011).

Man hasn't worked on the show since Season 3. He's stated that he left because he felt it wouldn't be the same without Stephen Hillenburg at the helm.

Have you even seen the original...? They've survived above land in both the movie and in "Pressure" from Season 2. I doubt anybody dies.
