My attempt at creating a digital ink and paint version of ‘Help Wanted’:
Help Wanted (Digital Ink and Paint).png
Since ‘Help Wanted’ is also the oldest-looking episode of the series (the cel-animated version looks 1993), which year do you think my digital ink and paint version of the episode looks like?

Why do you think it still looks 1993?

Behind the scenes, I’ve disabled anti-aliasing while drawing this image at 800x600 resolution, and then used Petscop NTSC to add the analogue videotape filter. I’ve also picked colours from the episode and adjusted them slightly to make them look more ‘digital’.

What year do you think each season of Adventure Time looks? I'll go first

Season 1: 2008/09 (outdated looking HD animation, bold lines that make me think of the late 00's, garish colors)
Season 1: 2010 (episodes at the tail end of the season, from Freak City to Gut Grinder, outlines are more thin and Jake's jowls are smaller)
Season 2: The entire season looks 2010, from start to finish, every single episode
Season 3: 2010 (pseudo season 2 episodes; Conquest of Cuteness, Hitman, Still, most of Memory of a Memory)
Season 3: 2011 (episodes that are hybrids and are a little bit more detailed looking with a slightly noticeable art style change, especially with Jake. The Monster, Apple Thief, From Bad to Worse, Wizard Battle, Fionna and Cake, The New Frontier, Ghost Princess)
Season 3: 2012 (episodes with the orange tint and modern looking designs; Morituri Te Salutamus, Too Young, The Creeps, What was Missing, Dad's Dungeon, Jake vs. Me-mow, Nobody Can Hear You, Thank You, Holly Jolly Secrets, Marceline's Closet, Paper Pete, Another Way, Inceduim)
Season 4: The entire season looks 2012
Season 5.1: 2012/13
Season 5.2-Come Along With Me: 2015. Every episode from Wizards Only Fools to Come Along with Me looks 2015, cleaner linework, very detailed artwork, PB and Marcy have more realistic human like body proportions as opposed to being shaped like lollypops like they did in season 1. Colors and shading has greatly improved.

Distant Lands: 2019 (Vectored lines)

It reminds me of the early Beavis and Butthead shorts. It still looks like early digital animation. But now that I take another look, it looks '97

The Simpsons episode ‘Radioactive Man’ was animated with digital ink and paint. Since SpongeyMind wanted us to talk more about The Simpsons in this thread, can you tell what year each season of The Simpsons (including the Tracey Ullman shorts) looks like?

Tracy Ullman: 1984
Season 1: 1988/89
Season 2-4: 1992
Season 5-9: 1994/95
Season 9-10: 1997
Season 11-13: 1999
Season 13-19: 2003
Early HD Simpsons: 2008
Current Simpsons: 2013-2015
For me:

Tracey Ullman shorts: Some of the early shorts with extremely rough characters look 1984. The typical episode looks 1985. Some of the later shorts with more refined characters look 1986.
Season 1: Most of the season looks 1989. ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ looks 1988 because it’s the first produced episode.
Season 2: It looks 1990, from beginning to end.
Season 3: It looks 1991, from beginning to end.
Season 4: It looks 1992, from beginning to end.
Season 5: It looks 1993, from beginning to end.
Seasons 6: It looks 1994, from beginning to end. ‘Radioactive Man’ looks 1996 because it’s digital ink and paint.
Season 8: It looks 1995, from beginning to end.
Seasons 9: It looks 1996, from beginning to end.
Season 10: It looks 1997, from beginning to end.
Seasons 11-13: They look 1999 for the most part. ‘Tennis the Menace’ looks 2000 because it’s digital ink and paint.
Season 14: The cel-animated episodes look 2000, whereas the digitally animated episodes look 2002.
Seasons 15-18: These seasons look 2003, from beginning to end.
Seasons 19-20a: Season 19 and the first nine episodes of season 20 look 2006, from beginning to end.
Seasons 20b-21: They look 2008, because of the very rough line quality.
Seasons 22-25: They look 2010, because the line quality isn’t as rough as seasons 20b-21.
Season 26: It looks 2012, from beginning to end.
Seasons 27-30: These seasons look 2014, from beginning to end.
Seasons 31-present: Every episode of the series from season 31 onwards looks 2015.

Pilot episode: 1997
Season 1: 1998/99
Season 2: 1999/2000 for the most part. ‘Da Boom’ looks 1997 because of the dull and very bad colouring.
Season 3: 2001
Season 4: 2003/2004
Seasons 5-6a: 2004
Seasons 6b-7: 2006/2007
Season 8: 2008
Seasons 9-present: 2012

Season 7 of Family Guy has very bad scaling issues for whatever reason

Here is my recreation of SpongeBob’s season 9b model sheet; I use it to emulate the look of older SpongeBob episodes:
SpongeBob (1440x1080).png
This version of the drawing is at 1440x1080 resolution, the original is at 9600x7200 resolution, since I want to maintain a high quality level for the edits of my drawing.

Do you have paint.net? If so, can you create your own edits of this image and simulate the years of cartoon episodes in paint.net? Along with changing the colours with Paint Bucket, these are the tools you need:
  • Resize - Resize it to 640x480 for SD content. Use nearest neighbor sampling to simulate the poor line quality of early digital SD and early digital HD content.
  • Canvas Size - Expand the canvas to 1920x1080 and colour the white areas the background so that it’s still in 16:9 for HD content.
  • Curves - To adjust the colours slightly.
  • Gaussian Blur - To adjust the blurriness of the image.
  • Sharpen - Combine with gaussian blur after applying sharpen to simulate the poor line quality of early digital SD content.
  • Add Noise - To simulate the grain for cel animation.
  • Highlights / Shadows - To adjust the colours slightly, and set the clarity to -100 and adjust the radius to emulate the cel look.
  • Petscop NTSC (not bundled with the default edition of paint.net) - To emulate the look of videotape.
