The VHS effect is caused by composite. What about the greenish tint in episodes such as Wormy and Sailor Mouth

Dang, I bet early 2000's Simpson also had it on certain episodes.

And yeah, sometime colours get really strange when on DVDs it happens to SpongeBob sometimes too.
Early 2000s simpsons looks completely normal, only 90s simpsons has the dot crawl

Composite, not component

There isn't a green tint/filter over the episodes, I'm assuming that they were just animated like that, where the color pallete they set up on the computers was more on the cool side than warm.

Also composite causes the VHS effect, not component.

Fixed, I meant to say composite. Now the reason why it's not an issue in Component (YbBPr), is because it separates the luminance for each primary color.
I think it may be worse, some episodes might've been transferred with a coaxial cable

I have two questions

1). Are there other Netflix releases of SpongeBob that have Dumped, Mermaidman and Barnacleboy III and Artist Unknown/Sailor Mouth without dot crawl?

2). How come every release of the episode Dumped has dot crawl? (Even the DVDs) while its sister episode, Survival of the Idiots, doesn't? I have never seen Dumped without dot crawl, in fact, watch that episode and its sister episode air on the station, they look awful. Dumped has dot crawl on DVDs like I said, but it's nowhere near as bad as the TV airings. They might just look even worse than Procrastination/I'm With Stupid.

Yuck!

Notice how everything looks all 'starry', like the dots on the title cards (Snow dots for SOTI and orange dots for Dumped), the episodes look so bad that the outlines are barely visible, even at low contrast. Say what you will about Procrastination/IWS, but at least you can notice some detail in those episodes.

I think we're just out of luck with Dumped and Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III. Also, Life of Crime, The Secret Box, and Band Geeks aren't available without 'the VHS effect', the international copies all have the sickly pale SpongeBob.

I have The Donut of Shame without dot crawl if you want it

Wait, I think we can salvage Dumped. The one on Netflix seems to only have dot crawl. Which is apparently fully removable. Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III has that weird rainbow effect that, which to my knowledge, isn't removable.

Edit: The one on Netflix does have the rainbow effect, but it is only minimal. It's not a huge deal

Man, that sucks, but at least most of the episodes look good.

Do you think the original episode files have these issues (The studio prints) since those are the raw copies?

We know that Procrastination looks bad because the VHS tape for the episode got messed up after the deleted scene was cut, but why does Survival of the Idiots/Dumped look so terrible, it looks like a sitcom from the mid-1980s, the episode looks a decade and a half older than it actually is

Another thing, the first half of season 2 looks newer than season the second half, I would rather deal with pale Spongebob than the VHS dot crawl rainbow effect. I don't get why Spongebob had so many issues when they switched the animation to digital ink and paint, all the other shows looked normal when they switched to electronic coloring

I also think they begun transferring episodes over using Component sometime in Summer 2001, The Bully/Just One Bite is the first episode to not have the dot crawl

I have no clue why those episodes look so bad, and yeah, I agree, but even though the DVDs are higher quality, I wish that they didn't have the coloring issues unlike the TV versions.

>VHS tape
>used on broadcast

Yeah, because if it were actually on VHS it totally wouldn't degrade rapidly with every passing year and have something like this today

Somebody apparently asked Adam Paloian on Twitter if he knows how the film elements are for Season 1, and the digital files for Seasons 2 & and onward. Now, this was many months ago, but hey :P

Dr. Rock: "Do you know of the current state of the film elements of Season 1/digital files for 2+? Could Nick issue a full remaster if they wanted?"

Adam Paloian: "I don't but I have talked to the Nick archives about it. I would really like it if Nickelodeon did a remastered version soon."

Brian Koch: "I would absolutely pay for this"

Bad news for season 1, some of the episode's cels are already sold, so there's no way of rephottographing the cels.
As for season 2, it was colored using Windows 95, they might get an error trying to load in on a modern PC.

What about the film print for Season 1?

Some episodes of season 1 still have the VHS effect

I feel like the remasters for Season 1 aren't actually remasters, just HD upscales of the master tapes, and not actually the film elements being remastered, which might be why some Season 1 episodes have the VHS effect, also, the cels aren't the whole art itself, they also need to find background paintings, and storyboards, etc, so they may have to use the film elements to make it easier, plus film elements can be scanned to 4K too.

Dang that's weird, when Netflix had SpongeBob it didn't seem too great.

Yeah, some SpongeBob episodes look perfectly fine on Netflix, but some others look awful.

Anyone have screenshots of the SpongeBob episodes "Nature Pants" and "Opposite Day" from UK, France or Germany airings? I'm sure their airings have no dot crawl at all.

Not from the UK, France, or Germany, but I went to the Nickelodeon Spanish YouTube channel, and found a version of Nature Pants/Opposite Day, and there is no dot crawl, but they made it very pixelated for some odd reason, but no dot crawl nonetheless.

The strange thing is however, that Rock Bottom/Arrgh! still have dot crawl on the YouTube channel, iTunes, Amazon, pretty much everywhere, except the film elements I assume (the 35mm film prints, or however many millimeters the original reels for Season 1 are).
