I'd say it depends on whatever fits the episode, like a lot of things in the show. I honestly think that in most episodes, people are either partial or indifferent to SpongeBob!

Yes can get that some of it is justified especially in the Pre-Movie episodes, but when all Squidward wants to do is to have peace and quiet by himself - I can't really see any justification for the crap Squidward has to go through.

I feel like it doesn't have to be justified. This isn't a direct remark towards you, but I've seen a lot of people take these hijinks a lot more seriously than the writers intended for us too. I really enjoy the dynamic of an oblivious goofball and a grumpy guy. That's the main appeal, right? In almost all instances, I find their interactions charming and/or funny. Squidward's trademark trait is his egotistical selfishness; he doesn't like anything or anyone that doesn't relate to himself, his interests, or his needs. This makes him being annoyed/hurt a lot easier to laugh at in most cases, especially combined with the cartoonish nature of SpongeBob's antics and Squidward's personality.
 
I’ve grown to think Birthday Blowout is a rather really hit or miss TV movie at best. While I do appreciate it’s Trusty Slab scene and beautiful ending, half of the movie is rather very aimless with some of the live actions bits (especially that beans scene :scaredsquid:) being nonsensical and I especially don’t like Patrick’s behavior (he’s generally unbearable in some scenes)

I still prefer it over Truth or Square any-day but it’s still a very mixed special with some great and quite awful content thrown in together. It could’ve been so much better…

The specials are the best example of, "Hit or Miss."

Some of them will be amazing like "What ever happened to SpongeBob," "Have you seen this snail?" or "Friend or foe."

But then you have ones like "Frozen face-off" or that lost episode one and its rally inconsistent imo XD
