I don't see why I should like one over the other one. It's not a very big deal

It's about as big a deal as when they got rid of the outline on Plankton's pupil in season 4. Although, I think it's a nice little touch that makes the animation look less flat and more colorful.

It makes him feel more like a pet, which he should seem like.

Yes. And when he appears simple on the outside it makes it funnier that inside he's actually smart.
