With the lazy power of Google Translate, I have concluded that Spongebob's name in Japanese would be:

"Hiroba-Pantsu Suponjibobu"

I think the other characters would address him as Suponji-Chan.

We've seen a Powerpuff Girls anime and a Stitch anime. Why is there no Spongebob anime yet? If any adorable huggable show would somehow make a great spinoff anime, with lots of shojo sparkles and pink bubbles, it's Spongebob.

His name in Japanese is officially スポンジ・ボブ, which is Suponji Bobu. He doesn't have a last name in the Japanese SpongeBob - it's simply Suponji Bobu. :)

Some other characters, according to this page:

Patrick: パトリック (Patorikku)
Squidward: イカルド (Ikarudo)
Mr. Krabs: カーニ (Kaani)
Gary: ゲイリー (Geirii)
Sandy: サンディ (Sandei... "dei" sounds like "di", but it's a softer tone)
Plankton: プランクトン (Purankuton)
Flying Dutchman: さまよえるオランダ人 (Samayoeru Oranda-jin)
Mrs. Puff: パフ先生 -or- パフせんせい (Pafu-sensei)
Pearl: パール (Paaru)
Mermaid Man: マーメイドマン (Maameidoman)
Barnacle Boy: フジツボボーイ (Fujitsubobooi)

I hope this helps. ^_^

Edit: Flying Dutchman's 人 refers to the "man" reading, so I fixed the name. And apparently I made a typo with Barnacle Boy... I'm not so good at romaji. lmao.

Edit #2: Apparently I was right about the Flying Dutchman's reading. I doubt myself too much. -_-

I wonder how they translate jokes and plot points that reference the "square" part of SpongeBob's name in languages where that part isn't translated.

I've watched a couple of the Japanese episodes. It's just implied to be referring to his pants and its shape, not necessarily his name. :)

In the Japanese dub, is there any indication that he has a last/family name?
I don't think there's a Japanese dub... that would simply be the original English SpongeBob. If there was a dub, it would probably be fan-made.

Correction: see post #16.

So.... the show airs in Japan with subtitles?
Sort of. According to my teacher, if you watch it in Japan, you won't find English subtitles because it's a kids' network. English subtitles are becoming a thing on the anime channels in Japan, but that's pretty much the lone exception other than the news.

Oops. Accidentally sent the post. The Japanese SpongeBob DVDs do come with the English subtitles though.

Whaaaaat why does Plankton sound like a little girl. :wetpaint:

It's probably to play on the fact that Plankton is so small, so they gave him a young boy's voice to make him sound cute. All the little boys in Japanese cartoons sound like that.

Oh, I was confused by what you meant by "Japanese dub". A lot of people use "dub" incorrectly, so I assumed the wrong meaning. I thought you meant somebody taking the Japanese translation and dubbing it back into English. Oops.

So I correct my statement: there is a Japanese dub.

I like Spongebob's voice in the Japanese dub.
