You say 'usually' yellow. So, it's possible that he could be a different color.
What I mean is that even though you can buy artificial sponges in other colours, the one that people automatically think of is bright yellow. If you look up "sponge" on Google Images, that's the dominating colour. If SpongeBob were pink, the "Ha! He looks like a kitchen sponge" thing wouldn't be as striking.

And the "gay" thing would be a lot more apparent. @_@

Which episode was that from?
Anyway, Patrick doesn't look good when he has Spongebob's skin. Spongebob with Patrick's skin is okay.

I must admit, I don't really like pink, but this design is amazing. I love it.

(Is it pink or purple, btw? I'm color blind.)

Yes, but SpongeBob has had such an enormous and wide-reaching cultural effect that merely searching the word "sponge" will probably generate some images of SpongeBob and in general change the idea of what we think of as the color of a sponge.

I'm not saying yellow wouldn't still be, but I'd be interested to know what the predominating color would have been on a Google Images search of the word "sponge" in, say, 1998.

Why would we edit that? Wouldn't allow editing on that remark.
