Season 1: High Meh Season
Honestly, there are a lot of good ones in season 1. However, the duds are probably worse than some other seasons, and it honestly really lowers down the quality of the season. But there are a couple episodes that are still pretty outstanding, and are good episodes. It's not a season I would want to binge, but it does have some good episodes that really bring it up.

  • SB-149 is such a great episode, regardless of the prehistorical Spongebob meme.
  • Pizza Delivery isn't overrated. The Krusty Krab Pizza song is actually overrated indeed.
  • I recently rewatched F.U.N., and Spongebob finding the Krabby Patty inside Plankton's "pocket" was surprisingly a very weak twist. I didn't expect it to be so predictable.
  • The "I see you-MY LEG" combo during Plankton's dream in Sleepy Time is a highlight.
  • Patrick laughing at Squidward's unfunny one-liners in Culture Shock is another highlight.
  • Ripped Pants is repetitive, I don't care for the song and Sandy's characterization leaves to be desired, Jellyfish Jam's only memories are its songs because it has no plot, Opposite Day has a great opposite montage, a satisfying ending, but an irritating middle, Squeaky Boots reuses animation, Neptune's Spatula is VERY SLOW, Walking Small is forgettable and...
    "Stepping on the beach" sounds VERY annoying
    and I used to like Sandy's Rocket back then, but now I just don't enjoy how Spongebob and Sandy are portrayed.
  • I Was a Teenage Gary is a weird one, but very far from S1 worst. I don't think it's worse than the mediocre cringe which is The Chaperone.
  • Now, as for Fools in April, it doesn't actually start too bad. I even consider Squidward's prank on Spongebob kinda funny, but after that the episode gets very boring. Plus, the ending is more rushed than nonsensical, like they didn't know how to end the story.
  • Nature Pants has no reason for existing, Spongebob has no reason for leaving everything to go living with jellyfish and Patrick ranging from desperate to downright obsessed is definitely unsettling, The Paper is just STUPID and Jellyfishing starts solidly (I mean, the beginning montage has Spongebob's ALPHA JELLYFISHING GLASSES in it), but unfortunately the rest is so unpleasant. Now THAT's way worse than IWATG, it's my personal worst S1 episode. Also... the classic Krusty Krab theme = firmly grasp it??? WHY?

Additional Comments:
Really great introduction to SpongeBob! This season is really great and I like rewatching it all the time. I like all the episodes here, but Nature Pants kind of bores and annoys me, so I often skip it on my rewatches...which is too bad because it has one of my favorite jokes with SpongeBob throwing the fire extinguisher at the fire.

I also don't like rewatching Hooky because I don't like seeing SpongeBob be embarassed lmao, I hate second-hand embarassment.

  • SB-129 is easily the best episode of this season due to a lot of good gags
  • I used to hate Pizza Delivery but since i am rewatching the show i actually now like it
  • Walking Small is REALLY good
  • Pickles isnt meh i just accidentally put on the meh section
  • Hall Monitor does indeed have a solid amount of humor but the gags are a bit weak
  • I despise The Paper because i almost fell asleep during it
  • Jellyfish Jam is the probably the first bad episode of spongebob in my opinion as well as the worst episode of season 1

Thoughts:
It is surprising how good Season 1 is, most first seasons are usually regarded as a bit slower, a bit worse than the later seasons, but season 1 is for the most part, prime SpongeBob, sure, most of the early episodes landed in the bottom half of this list, and this season still had a dud or two, but when I only consider one out of your 41 episodes bad, you’ve got a pretty good show on your hands.
 
I think Season 1 is a classic and probably the most charming season of the series imo. This season does a great job introducing and establishing the show/characters. It's also a very solid start for the series. A lot of other series' first seasons end up being weaker than the rest. But I don't feel that way as much with this one. Aside from maybe a few episodes being a bit weaker, most of the episodes are very good imo. I feel the characters might be at their most charming here too, which is good for their introduction. Not at their funniest, but most charming I feel. This is still a very funny season though. I think the next few seasons are stronger as the series developed more, but this season is still strong. The cel animation is also very charming and retro.

Ooooh boy, season one. This truly was, and still remains as, a magical season. I think the main reason is that the characters drive pretty much every episode of the season. They are all wonderfully characterized, and they make every episode a guilty pleasure to revisit, no matter how bad they might be quality-wise. Yes, there were 2 duds from the season, but I can at least find more enjoyment from watching them than some of the other stuff from the classic era. On the flip side, there are a lot of episodes from the season that are absolutely beautiful, and still hold up because of their stories and characters. The comedy is here, but I would probably categorize most of the jokes as awkward humor, which was fine, but when they found their footing in the seasons to come, they starting delving into visual gags and wordplay humor, which I think works better. Some of the funniest episodes of the season, including "Naughty Nautical Neighbors" and "Musclebob Buffpants" did include wordplay and clever visuals, but for the most part, Season 1 just kinda feels like it's struggling to do the funny. That's not a big deal though, because the season contains really well-told stories as well. "Pickles", "Arrgh!" and "F.U.N." are the most tightly-written episodes in here, which is honestly pretty amazing considering this is the FIRST season.
I'm pretty sure everyone has seen all the episodes from this season alone, but if you haven't for some reason, I do highly recommend it, as it gives a good insight to the characters and tells good stories that relate to them.

Nature Pants: BRUH I REALLY WISH I LIKED THIS EPISODE I REALLY DO BUT I DONT! This episode is just not funny but depressing and very sad i cried at the stupidy of this episode. Defiantly in my dungeon of atrocities along with The Splinter Big Sister Sam and To Love a Patty and Crappy Land (Krabby Land)

Squeaky Boots: I never understood why people this episode its got many funny jokes and its very fun to watch. The ending was funny too! Sure its annoying but i think the annoyingness was personal meaning this episode was SUPPOSED to be annoying.

Sleepy Time: Ahhhhh yes the first episode i ever watched was Sleepy Time i love the animation here! Theres not much to explain though.

Walking Small: The jokes in fellow season 1 episode Walking Small are jokes to remember. I had many laughs at this episode! It also spawned my favorite quote which is "You used me... FOR LAND DEVELOPMENT?!"

SB-129: I believe this episode is a winner because it had much insanity. Insanity is awesome

  • Arrgh! is a fun, funny adventure-filled episode, and Mr Krabs gets his comeuppance, which I appreciate
  • SB-129, Pizza Delivery, Rock Bottom & Scaredy Pants are all great episodes, but I prefer Arrgh! simply because of the adventure aspect.
  • I Was A Teenage Gary is just boring,
  • and I never liked Jellyfishing.
 
I miss this season's animation. It made everything look so cute!! D'awwwwww
