I'm in the minority that thinks the entire show's quality is fairly consistent.

Still, I do agree that this seems kind of nostalgia pandering.

I don't think they were "nostalgia pandering". It was just something to spice up the episode, after all, the mall is a perfect place for cameos like this. Is that a bad thing? The episode was good enough on its own so it's not like they were relying on the cameos. It's just a little something they threw in for fun.
