Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie

Added to Calendar: 08-02-24

I can't really say that it's the best SpongeBob movie or anything but it was an ok fun little Sandy & SpongeBob adventure. The villain's idea of modifying fish & sea creatures so they can breathe outside of the sea is interesting lol.
Not sure how SpongeBob was breathing out of water that long even with the hydration lotion (& briefly pool water) and how were the others breathing out of water inside the lab? That was a slow ride SpongeBob went on while we heard the villain backstory lol. Got a laugh out of me when the dog found a way to carry on chasing them by hang gliding lol.

I was really looking forward to this movie ever since it was announced and avoided watching the leak so I could watch it when it officially released. I honestly can't believe how awful it was. I've been watching SpongeBob for 25 years and have never been so disappointed in something from the franchise.

SpongeBob was horribly out of character and he along with other characters just would say pointless lines and jokes for no reason other than filler. SpongeBob essentially being killed by being reduced to thousands of clones was brutal and unnecessary. Everything that took place in the lab was terrible, unfunny, and poorly made. Wanda Sykes would've been a better villain if her character made more sense but you literally get a backstory in which her younger self is represented as a child with her adult head pasted over the child's head. I'm guessing it was supposed to look intentionally bad considering the series likes doing weird stuff with live action but it was just unsettling.

Then Sue Nahmee is revealed to be a robot and her head falls off and fuses with a fish? Seriously? Sandy's family serves little purpose other than to say this movie shows the family she came from. I did like Randy though. Where are her sister and nieces that were introduced 2 seasons ago? I know continuity doesn't exist in SpongeBob but still. I personally like Sandy's bosses from Chimps Ahoy better than B.O.O.T.S. as well. They at least seemed somewhat competent, Sandy seems way too smart to be working with/for these morons that were introduced in this movie.

I thought maybe the ending would be a cute way to end this on a somewhat good note but then we had to see Kyle/Phoebe shrunk down in the audience with their live action heads in CGI water suits and the weird Sue/fish abomination at the end to remind me how awful this movie is.

I love this franchise and will continue to watch and support whatever comes from it, but this is by far, hands down the worst thing this franchise has ever produced. I really was hoping to like this because it had a lot of potential, but this just fell completely flat. At least the 4th SpongeBob movie has potential to be really good. 2/10

Well, I needed something to watch and something to review! My buddy on Discord would probably be mad I'm watching the 4th SpongeBob movie instead of his show he recommended, but I'll get to both I swear... I decided since I'm watching the new movie that I could review it too! This is gonna be a long review, since it's a full movie and not just an episode like I usually review.

I haven't heard a lot about this movie except from SBM and occasionally a video on YouTube will come up about it. I've been avoiding those videos since I didn't want to spoil the movie or get an opinion on it before even seeing it. But the other 3 movies were everywhere when they first were coming into theaters. To be fair, they were also all theatrically released and this one was just a Netflix release, I've heard almost nothing about this one.

But when the movie started, it started with a song. Now that I look at it 2 of the other 3 movies also started with a song. The first one started with the SpongeBob theme song by the pirates, and the third one started with It's Always Sunny in Bikini Bottom by Weezer. But I didn't personally care for this song. It really wasn't my favorite, but one thing I'll give it is that at least it's better than Sandy's Atlantis SquarePantis songs, which were both awful in my opinion. It was better but not by much.

The movies animation seemed a little... off? I don't really know how to describe it. It looks more like a Battle for Bikini Bottom for the PS4 or something than it does a SpongeBob movie. Of course, the animation isn't everything to a movie, I value a lot over animation. Though personally I think it would have been cool had they switched back to 2D for this movie. Of course that's also because I'm a huge fan of 2D animation and believe companies like Disney should return back to 2D animation. That's one thing I'll sorta give Nickelodeon, lots of their shows (even new ones) like Rock, Paper, Scissors are still 2D. Though, the animation felt a little better once SpongeBob and Sandy got on land.

I do like the Sparky character and hope he appears in the series at some point. I feel like it'd be cool to see Sandy owning a pet and having them appear in more episodes than 1. Like with Gary and Spot how they make multiple appearances, if Sparky appeared again, possibly they could make episodes with all 3 of them. Too bad he didn't really appear for long.

Also, the movie confirmed SpongeBob has streaming services on his TV... I wonder what he watches. (And it's funny how sad he gets over not being able to watch his TV... I'd be sad too if I couldn't watch my South Park anymore so I get it :( ...)

For anyone saying this was the first appearance of humans in the movies, it's not. Burger Beard was in the 2nd movie, seemed to work out pretty well. And it wasn't as shocking or scary as everyone was saying it was. And I liked the Kyle character in the beginning... he's just like me!

Tsu Nami's song was okay I guess... I don't have much to say about it.

For the rattlesnake scene with Sandy's family. Not a bad fight scene! Also it was nice seeing Sandy's family! I hope they appear in some future episodes, along with Sparky. I wish to see them animated in the better looking 2D style. That's just my opinion though. Well, I like how they did this at least. Sandy's parents have never been seen before, Sandy has only mentioned her "pa" in episodes before. It's better than how they kinda butchered Sandy's origin story in the third movie which is my main complaint about that one...

The storyline was introduced much better soon. Was this an animal welfare metaphor? While they're fictional, I could see a large company try to do something like this. Of course while I do love the concept of a cuddly little SpongeBob, that's what my little birthday hat SpongeBob plushie is for. It's kind of expanded upon on how awful the kids treat them, and it reminded me a little of how little kids treat pocket pets like hamsters because they're seen as "starter pets". And then for Plankton's line "this is like highschool all over again", it's like me but with middle school... I feel your pain, Plankton, I feel your pain. They didn't pick me up with a giant net either...

We got Squidward to say "someone kill me now" and that just sounds like something I would say. Also what was Tsu Nami's backstory scene? It reminded me of an awfully edited South Park-like clone. I think it was supposed to look awful but it was an interesting choice... And Tsu being a robot? Another interesting choice. But on question... what happened to the pug? I was worried, was the dog okay? But he was. Then we get to see a slightly disturbing scene where SpongeBob starts throwing up baby SpongeBob clones and saying he didn't even know the real him anymore... I was a little disturbed... also Tsu just wanted to cuddle fish. I mean in her defense, SpongeBob does look like he'd be nice to hug.

Well, this review was all over the place. That's also because this movie failed to keep my attention over food (i'm pretty hungry) and my adorable Kyle plushie (who I was preparing for a YouTube video). Though the Surf and Turf song wasn't the best, it was better than the other songs of this movie... and the end credits song wasn't awful either, in fact its stuck in my head now.

But can we talk about the beautiful art in the credits?? If this movie was animated in this style, that would be a cute style. Or if we reverted back to how the first SpongeBob movie had some great live action scenes (like the David Hasselhof scene) with the characters remaining in the SpongeBob style. I would like that. While I do believe this movie could have been improved, I did not find it to be bad. While I would rank it lower than the other 3, it was not awful and doesn't deserve the hate its been getting.

So for a final grade and rating i'll give it a 6/10 (C- Rank) for not being the worst but also not the best.

So, I finally watched the film today. I'm not sure if this will become an unpopular opinion, but I actually enjoyed it. Things I liked include the banger soundtrack and Sue Nahmee's pug Cuda, her vocal effects courtesy of Dee Bradley Baker himself. The scene involving SpongeBob tickling people's feet in the pool is the only thing I disliked because of how unnecessary it is. Overall, I'm rating it 7/10. Had this film not had the unnecessary scene, I would've rated it 8/10.
