Plankton: The Movie

Added to Calendar: 03-07-25

I love this film for so many reasons, and I'm moreso a lover of the classic Spongebob seasons.

I admired the effort to explore both Plankton and Karen to a much deeper level than what had been done previously, and expanding the scope of development not only for each respected character, but them as a whole dynamic.

It's just crazy to me that Plankton was supposed to be this one off character originally, but years later became a whole fleshed out villain arc in the series. It's also nice seeing a new side of Karen, when before she was simply a character who helped egg Plankton on with his wicked misdeeds against Krabs, and not necessarily a character someone would care to write home about.

I could go on and on and delve into specific scenes of the movie, but I know not everyone on here has watched it yet, so I'm trying to withhold spoilers! But, at least from my perspective, I think this film deserves a good watch by anybody even if they won't enjoy to the same degree I have.

I don't have a rating list, but if I did, The Plankton movie would easily be a 10/10 for me. :sbparty:

Plankton: The Movie was in-offensive and way better than the Sandy movie.

However I will say that I didn't like it very much.

The whole film just feels like a regular episode of SpongeBob stretched out to 80 minutes, also being CGI and having parts of actually really good animation. Anyways, compared to first SpongeBob film and Sponge Out of Water, like The Sandy Movie and Sponge on the Run it left a lot of things to be desired.

First and foremost, the stakes are almost non-existent. Throughout the movie I always had the feeling nothing was gonna happen, and I wasn't on the edge of my seat through the film. In the first film and the second film, heck even the third film, I was pretty much on the edge on my seat, especially for the first one, Neptune was a very threating 'villain' and so was Plankton, in fact, Plankton was the best in the first film than he ever was in the series arguably. Here, it just felt like another SpongeBob episode, just 80 minutes long.

The film had lots of missed potential. If it followed Plankton ACTUALLY being the bad guy and trying to rule the world, without Krabs and SpongeBob interfering, I would've loved it more, but yet again it's about Plankton being the good guy and trying to win Karen's heart, which sounds interesting, but Plankton barely cares about her in the actual show so... I didn't really care.

And the thing that is in literally every SpongeBob movie (if you count the desert scene in Sponge on the Run), they go to the surface. Anyone else tired of this trend? It was cool in 1 and 2, but got repetitive quickly. I hope I am not sounding like a Spongeboomer, but the truth is I am really tired of this trend.

I'm glad SpongeBob wasn't sidelined to being a doofus as he was in The Sandy Movie, which arguably kind of turned him into Patrick, but anyway, SpongeBob atleast felt like SpongeBob.

The songs in this film were actually pretty good, sure the film didn't need to be a musical for any real reason, but I'm fine with that decision. The songs were actually decent.

My thoughts? Despite all of my complaining, I found the film serviceable. I'll probably never watch it again, cause it's nowhere near as fun as 1 and 2 were, but it wasn't boring and it wasn't frustrating. SpongeBob at this point (arguably) is made pretty much for kids and doesn't really have the same broad appeal it had back in pre-movie and even a bit of post-sequel SpongeBob, but this film, The Sandy Movie and Sponge on the Run are definitely for the kiddos.

Rating - 5.5/10

TL;DR: It was a serviceable and okay film, but nothing outstanding and really memorable.
