Not just Disney but movies in general have been getting called out on wrongly depicting certain people's bodies in movies. I'm actually quite sick of it, tbh.

I get that it's a disgrace and embarrassing to your 'clan' or 'culture' but give me a break. Animators are not doing this out of hate. I honestly believe they are doing it to make a loveable character.

I really hate today's generation of parents and adults (yes I realize I'm part of this generation) that bring up stupid issues because they don't want their kids thinking of the wrong idea. News flash: You can't keep your children from thinking like you or what you want them to think their whole lives. They will learn eventually. And when they do, I'm sure they will just laugh at it or enjoy whatever they are looking at.

Thoughts?

Same.

Seriously, people need to lighten up. Some cultures are just more "plump" than others. In ancient Greece, women who were "curvy" were considered more beautiful than those who were more on the skinny side. If someone thinks this is embarrassing to their culture, they need to 1) remember they are not the only one on the planet and plenty more are ok with it, and 2) read up more on their culture to find out that the way they are portrayed is most likely because that's the typical way they look.

Being fat is bad, it's a threat to your health and can end your life early. We shouldn't encourage it and doing so is more harmful than drawing skinny characters.

I can't believe some people don't get this.

I love you for this, SSJ *hugs*. It sucks with people THIS sensitive these days.

Who gives a ::dolphin noise:: if a character is fat? They clearly designed him so he'd be powerful and big. Granted, I'm an animation nerd and know a lot about character design. Plus it's not making fun of his stature, lol.

A lot of social outrage in general is kind of absurd and jumping to conclusions. The people who worked on this film weren't trying to offend fat people, that should be obvious. Even if some of the staff are truly bigoted, animation is a group effort and hundreds of people work on a film. A lot of this is misguided and these people think they're creating change when they're spewing vitriol and negativity.

We're talking about fat cartoon characters, not fat real life people.

I love how this meme image absolutely contradicts the point it's trying to make. If these people are so afraid that the character would send the wrong message to kids by depicting Polynesian men as obese blokes, then why not show the kids the... y'know... the real thing?

What? Do they think kids are more inclined to believe Disney's depictions of real life things ahead of real life's depictions on real life things? Come on, young children are NOT that fixated to the media. They WILL face the real world sooner rather than later, they will learn about all the caricatures and unrealistic depictions that the cartoons make for entertainment. They'll GROW UP, and if they don't?

That's your fault as a parent for failing to educate your children about the differences of fiction and real-life.

Entertainment can send the wrong message for very young people watching it, but it's not their duty to educate, it's their duty to entertain. I don't want to sound rude, but the fact is, fat cartoon characters are funny. They're cute, they wobble around, they're lovable and they're very marketable. If you don't want your kids to make fun of fat people in real life because of these fat cartoon characters, then just tell them.

Don't expect to have your kids behave perfectly if you leave them unattended, under no supervision, in front of your TV, all day, every day. You're ignoring your job, and it's your fault as a parent, not TV itself. I get you have jobs and shrimp, but there's no way you have no time to spend with your own kids.

We shouldn't make them feel bad for being fat and we should address that there are a lot of varying reasons why they can be fact: genetics, diet obviously, socioeconomic status, mental well-being, etc. We need to bring up a lot of light to those issues.

Getting angry over fat characters is also pointless because maybe some kid will look up to Maui as a role model and feel validated. I thought we were all about diversity and representing everyone. This may end up ostracizing fat people in a way. Another sad example of the group people are trying to protect ending up getting hurt anyway. Very hypocritical.

I completely agree, I'm saying we shouldn't act like it's completely okay and encourage people to be fat based on their will, however bullying people over it is completely wrong and there are many factors that can make it happen where it's just how they are.

That is true, but again, drawing a fully fictional cartoon character fat, with no intention to glorify his/her fatness** does not count as encouraging obesity. It's just a choice in character design.

**we'll have to watch the movie to be sure, but it's very unlikely that the character's fatness is going to be the plot's deus ex machina.

I'm just putting this out there in general, I don't think this affects the movie at all and I don't care how the characters look really, and to say this is "fat propaganda" (or something stupid like that) is crazy. I just wanted to rant about how PC society is becoming, at least in the US, not sure about elsewhere.

This reminds me of how people wanted to make Barbie fatter. She's a fictional character. Her stomach can be nonexistent for all I care. Don't change a character to make people feel better about themselves.

Yeah! Common sense my butt! I agree that people are failing to educate their children about common sense.

Drawing fat characters in cartoons is only accurate to real life, y'know?
Wow, Nicole Arbour really let herself go.
I thouught she never even had a hold.

How about we just let people draw their characters fat or skinny and have no consequences with doing either?

I'm sick of everybody overthinking this crap. It's NOT fatshaming if you're drawing people skinny, and it is NOT unhealthy to draw them as fat if you want to. If it's unrealistic, make sure people are aware of that. But no, people would rather try to POLICE what major animation companies want to do with their characters. It's just like the Frozen whitewashing issue all over again, except not as stupid since the Frozen's use of white people was completely realistic and appropriate.

The bottom line is simply not to police art or entertainment! People should be allowed to have the freedom to make what they want to make regardless of what other people's preferences are or what other people have to say.
