Hello there! A while ago, I have created a list of the top 20 worst Spongebob episodes to ever hit the air! And, a little bit after, I started thinking about the era BEFORE the movie. Since I believe that even Seasons 1-3 had its share of bad episodes, I have decided to post what I think are the worst ones. But, instead of 20 bad episodes (there’s not THAT many bad pre-movie episodes), I have decided to do 5 of them this time around.
Oh, and if you disagree with a certain episode on its list (or the episode you wanted to be here isn’t here), then feel free to speak your opinions. Just please don’t freak out over it. Alright, now I bring you the top 5 WORST Spongebob episodes from the first 3 seasons!
Number 5: Squilliam Returns
Out of all the Squidward vs. Squilliam episodes, this has got to be my least favorite. It begins with Squidward taking his lunch break when he runs into Squilliam, who has returned to Bikini Bottom (his first appearance being Band Geeks, a far better episode). Squilliam asks Squidward what he has been doing with his life ever since High School. Fearful and embarrassed, Squidward tells him that he owns a 5-star restaurant, which happens to be one of the finest in the sea. Because of this, Squilliam decides that he’s going to bring all of his friends with him to this restaurant tonight, which panics Squidward.
Mr. Krabs allows Squidward to own the restaurant for 1 day, since Squilliam is visiting tonight. Squidward tries to improve the restaurant (to a fancier style), but to no avail. He makes Krabs the head chef and he tries to form Spongebob into a fancy waiter. When this becomes too much for Spongebob, Squidward tells him to clear his thoughts of EVERYTHING except for fine dining, and breathing. But, Spongebob just stares into space.
Panicky and fearful, Squidward runs outside only to bump into Squilliam, who is just about to enter the Krusty Krab with his group. Once they enter the restaurant, they are both surprised to see that the Krusty Krab has been turned into what looks like the fanciest restaurant you could imagine! Spongebob, who now knows only fine dining and breathing, greets the two of them and serves Squilliam.
Spongebob explains to Squidward that he did all of this by himself and redecorated the restaurant to look aristocratic. Squilliam admits to Squidward that the restaurant is very nice and he compliments Squidward, telling him that he doesn’t suck eggs. When Squilliam compliments Spongebob and asks for his name, Spongebob starts to struggle (mentally) because he can’t remember (since he got rid of every thought except fancy dining and breathing). Soon, he snaps and he starts going crazy around the restaurant. He eventually causes chaos, destroying half of it and revealing it for what it truly is!
Humiliated, Squidward admits to Squilliam that he’s not really the person he said he was, revealing that he’s just a normal cashier at a normal restaurant. And here’s where the episode goes downhill! Squilliam admits that he’s just as poor and average as Squidward, only to say that he’s just kidding and that he’s “filthy stinkin’ rich”, which leaves Squidward upset and defeated.
Although I don’t mind the episode TOO much, this isn’t an episode that I like either. I didn’t like that Squilliam won in the end, since he’s my second least favorite character. And the ending itself was just a slap in the face and a big letdown for me.
Rating: 5.5
Worst Character: Squilliam
Worst Moment: The ending (except for the violin bit)
Hint for the next episode: playing with leaf blowers
