Filming of live action scenes

Some bits and pieces:
  • This morning I found a production report PDF which has SpongeBob listed for some filming May 9-16. The description is "Looks like live action reshoots with pirates". Note the use of the word pirates ... plural. Misunderstanding, or multiple pirates in this movie? I guess we'll have to wait to find out. (Source. You have to download the PDF to see it.)
  • Comment from an Iloura VFX Supervisor: "Working on the new SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS movie at the moment, which is a nice change of pace from what we’ve been doing the last couple of years. Its looking really good so far." (Source.)
  • A company called Monkey Deux is making the Electronic Press Kit for the movie, and also the DVD and Blu-ray special features. (Source.)

Or teaser trailer filming? They did say that the script was just written.
Or maybe I'm just obsessed with seeing a teaser.

I assume it means that they'll be filming on a sound stage. They already did some sound stage filming last year but I don't know how much.

A beach in Los Angeles. The image is cut off, so we can't read it properly, but it looks like [Something] State Beach, near Santa Monica Beach. If I had to guess I'd say Will Rogers, since it's the nearest state beach to Santa Monica according to this map. But don't quote me on it.

I live not too far from Santa Monica beach! I wonder if they're still doing casting calls for the beachgoers......

If I had to guess, maybe it's easier and less disruptive for them to do reshoots on one of LA's many beaches. With Tybee they'd have to apply to the city council again, get the beach closed off etc. Presumably the things they're filming aren't so major that you'd notice it was a different beach. Or if they are, they'll do something to make it look like Tybee in post-production.
