'The SpongeBob Movie' Surges Past Expectations With $55.4M

Paramount's The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water surprised in a big way this weekend with a very strong debut of $55.37 million. The 3D animated live-action hybrid film based on the long running animated series blew past pre-release expectations. The film opened 73 percent stronger than the $32.02 million debut of 2004's The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (without adjusting for ticket price inflation). The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water opened just 20 percent below the $69.05 million start of last year's The LEGO Movie, which was certainly unexpected. Without adjusting for ticket price inflation, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water delivered the fifth largest opening weekend ever for the month of February (behind only 2004's The Passion of the Christ, The LEGO Movie, 2001's Hannibal and 2010's Valentine's Day).

The Sponge better enjoy being on top for now because I feel like 50 Shades of Grey will knock this movie off of the #1 spot...

It will, but Spongebob will probably come in at #2 because it's a different demographic (I hope).

it would be a massive feat for an R rated movie to gross higher than a movie that successful, especially because a large percentage of movie watchers are children/teens.

Totally awesome first weekend. It should double what the first movie totaled, and may get to $200 million!

Paramount made the right decision to move SpongeBob's release date back a week to Feb 6th, because 50 Shades will unquestionably dominate the box office this upcoming weekend.

Eh, I don't know about 50 Shades of Grey booting SB off of #1 this weekend. 50 Shades is an R rated movie which means that only people of a certain age can watch it and statistically, PG movies like SB that anyone at any age can watch (especially the people who haven't seen it yet) usually gross more because there's more of an audience for them than there is for an R rated movie. SB will most likely stay at Number 1 and 50 Shades of Grey will probably be Number 2 speaking statistically.

50 Shades is very highly anticipated though. SpongeBob should hold up well enough with the family crowd and might come in 2nd, but 50 Shades (which is tracking for at least a $60M opening according to a Variety article) would have to massively underperform in order for SpongeBob to remain on top.

Fifty Shades Of Grey will beat Spongebob. It has sold more advanced tickets than any R rated movie in history and its trailer had the most views than any movie last year. It will beat SPongebob, but there is nothing else that will come at number 2, unless Kingsman does.

I wasn't aware of the obscene amount of hype for 50 Shades, as I really didn't believe it was THAT famous. There's also the fact that it has a 100% on RT, so it probably will beat Spongebob.

NORTH AMERICA: 'The SpongeBob Movie' Claims $57.9M In Four Days After Leading Monday With $2.50M

Paramount's The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water took in $2.50 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for a fourth consecutive day. The 3D animated live-action hybrid film was down 85 percent from Sunday. The SpongeBob Movie continues to exceed expectations in a very big way with a strong $57.87 million in four days. That places the film a very impressive 72 percent ahead of the $33.56 million four-day start of 2004's The SpongeBob Square Pants Movie and 20 percent behind the $72.54 million four-day take of last year's The LEGO Movie. Family films typically hold up well over Presidents Day weekend, so odds are strong that The SpongeBob Movie will hold up well over the next week, especially with no new family films being released this coming weekend.

#1 movie worldwide

Paramount's "SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out of Water" cleaned up at the worldwide box office this weekend soaking up an impressive $72.2 million in 26 territories and charming family audiences across the globe.

[...]

In North American box office action, the first part of the year has been heavy on Oscar contenders, adult dramas and movies aimed at older audiences which opened the door for the family-friendly "SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge out of Water" to draw huge box office dollars at the multiplex. Opening with a staggering $55.4 million, the Paramount release is the follow up to the Nov. 2004 release of the first "SpongeBob" movie that opened with $32 million on its way to a $85.4 million grand total in North America.

50 Shades of Grey doesn't seem to be doing so well so far.

Here are the Wednesday and Thursday numbers:

'American Sniper' Retakes First Place On Wednesday With $1.47M; 'SpongeBob: Sponge Out Of Water' Close Behind With $1.45M

Paramount's The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water grabbed $1.45 million yesterday as it inched down to second place. With $61.6 million in the bank through six days, the sequel is pacing an impressive 59 percent ahead of its 2004 predecessor heading into what promises to be a lucrative sophomore weekend.
'The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water' Absorbs $63.1M In Seven Days

Paramount's The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water was up one spot and 6 percent over Wednesday to return to first place on Thursday with $1.53 million. The 3D animated live-action hybrid film exceeded expectations in a big way this week with a first place seven-day take of $63.13 million. That was 54 percent stronger than the $40.95 million seven-day start of 2004's The SpongeBob Square Pants Movie and just 21 percent behind the $80.30 million seven-day gross of last year's The LEGO Movie. With aid from the Presidents Day holiday, The SpongeBob Movie is likely to hold up very nicely over the weekend.

Whaaaa? It's doing incredibly well. This article says it's tracking for a $85M weekend minimum. And apparently the other new release (Kingsman) has estimates for $40M. So SpongeBob could fall to 3rd place, though it should still hold up well considering it's the main family movie out now.
