We all know season 1 looks off, because of the bizzare cel stuff, and the store-bough ink and paint, and how no Computers at all were used for the animation, only the audio. But I think certain season 1 episodes look sloppy and ugly especially Patrick, how he was chubbier and was more red instead of pink, or how wide SpongeBob was this season, or his tan color through the whole season (Looks like they ran outta yellow paint), or even Sandy's small head a big buck tooth and how her tail was not visible through her spacesuit at all that season, or even Squidward's giraffe-like neck and green color, or Mr.Krabs dark red. Season 1 is a bizzare season.
Even Mr Krabs eyes were far apart and he was a brownish red tint
Even though the episodes in this season are good the cel animation is ugly and it had charm, I used to even get scared as a little kid whenever a Season 1 rerun was on, the ugly cel stuff made SpongeBob's snail transformation scarier, the only thing that could make it scarier is if it had odd digital coloring like Season 2.

It's maybe a bit off compared to what came in later seasons, I wouldn't call it ugly. Ah well, onions will be onions.

Generally I like the look of season 1 depending on the episode. But yeah, earlier on the characters got really off-model in a bad way. Like Squidward's massive weird arms near the end of "Home Sweet Pineapple."

At least it's not stiff, soulless, and cardboard-looking like later seasons. I'd take wobbly awkward off-modelness over soulless stiff garbage any day. No matter how deformed Squidward's arms get. Also, I like how in season 1 the colors were duller. They were still bright and vibrant, but not eye-hurtingly so.

On the plus side, the awkwardness of season 1 makes it fantastic material for YouTube Poops.

Also, I totally disagree, I love Patrick' design in season 1. He's so chubby and huggable-looking.

I agree that it's better than the stiff designs of modern Spongebob, but you're not wrong. Those designs in Help Wanted...eek. (Have you seen Gary?) I'm not a huge fan of it either, but hey, at least the stories were good.

I agree for a lot of this. Patrick's eyelids just look so standout because of his cel and his weird eyebrows. He looks nice too.

I actually like the more stiff one, it just looks fine and bright too.

Good, it seems like people went pass the Nickflower days... But I don't really care or notice if the animation was ugly.

I think that Patrick and Squidward's designs were really nice in Help Wanted. Squidward's face was a lot more expressive, and Patrick was much chubbier and his eyes were bigger. He was so cute.

Gary was terrifying in the pilot though

Surely, animation in Season 1 isn't the best but I don't think it's ugly. It is normal for a first season of a comedy show to be that way, a lot of shows have crude animation in earlier seasons like simpsons. For me this season has an innocent charm with its animation.

The only season from 90s...

I always hated the animation of 80'-90's cartoons. From the sloppiness to the darker color pallete, it's a huge stepdown from previous decades. The newer animations might be stiff, but at least they're getting their stuff together when it comes to coloring.

At least it's not like early-2000s digital coloring

The coloring in newer Spongebob is eye-hurtingly bright though. The earlier seasons were slightly more subdued.

I only think the colorings in this season and pretty much back then to be ugly. The animation is just fine imo.

I loved the animation cels in season 1 the most. Kinda wish they went back to the dull coloring instead of the Bright in your face colors.
