79b. Squid Wood

Not everyone hates this episode, but for those of you who do, I hope you'll let me explain why I enjoy it personally.

*Squidward was a grumpy jerk in this episode, and in most episodes leading up to it. It's easy to see why the Bottomites like Mini Squid.

*It's good to laugh at ourselves sometimes. Although granted, if they tried this again in a future episode, it might have been too much.

*Mini Squid, to be fair, is entertaining and can do all sort of interesting things. It's like The Paper but with a more interesting puppet.

*We can all relate to situations that someone better than us appears on the scene and we have to deal with the competition. So it's relatable.

*Squid abuse doesn't bother me because "OMG everyone's being mean to Squidward and that's not right!" I mean, that's just his role in the show sometimes. Squid abuse only bothers me when it's used as the source of every joke and when it make Spongebob and Patrick come off as incredibly annoying so that they're difficult to watch. That doesn't happen here- see my first point.

Overall, I think it's pretty funny. 9/10

I laughed at Squid Wood because I personally found it funny. Not top 5 of the season material but still good. Honestly one of the most underrated S4 episodes.

Squid Wood leans a little more on the mediocre side as it is a little mean to Squidward, but it's not horrible. The ending was actually pretty funny though! It's not as clever in writing and jokes, but a great story indeed. 7.5/10

Episode: Squid Wood (S4-E79-B)

I hate this episode. I hate it when SpongeBob makes Squidward's life miserable. Why? It goes like this. SpongeBob wants to play with Squidward but Squidward refuses, so SpongeBob keeps on doing it again. Even worse, SpongeBob is being SO ::dolphin noise:: GAY AND PERVERTED by stalking Squidward during his bubble bath while naked. His creepy smile annoys me, but his version in Boating Buddies was even the most creepy of all. Since Squidward refused SpongeBob to play with him, SpongeBob decided to play with Squid Wood, the puppet version of Squidward. At work, SpongeBob portrays Squid Wood to entertain the customers of The Krusty Krab. The Bikini Bottomites loves Squid Wood and not Squidward, even Mr. Krabs likes Squid Wood, so he assigned Squidward to wash the greasy dishes. That's just mean-spirited. The only thing I like there is their ::dolphin noise::-shaking dance. Feels like Anaconda to me. After Squidward lost respect to SpongeBob and his puppet, he destroys SpongeBob's puppet until the music critic Milo stops him. Squidward wants to join because he loves to play with the clarinet, but Milo prefers Squid Wood instead of Squidward, so Squidward's dreams were crushed. SpongeBob cheers him up but he plays with his new puppet of himself. That's not helping. I mean seriously, this episode is mean-spirited. The Squid Wood puppet must be destroyed by fire, along with the SpongeBob puppet, for ruining Squidward's life. In conclusion, THIS THE MOST ::dolphin noise:: STUPID AND MEAN-SPIRITED EPISODE EVER!!!

Final Score = 1/10  :patboo:

This is my least favorite season 4 episode.

Good Neighbors has the newspaper monster joke.

All That Glitters has the soap opera actor joke.

The Thing has the endangered species joke.

Squid Wood is probably the first SpongeBob episode to completely ignore humor. Give me Boat Smarts over this any day.

Man was this a stinker or what. The only good parts were Patrick’s cameo and SpongeBob playing charades with Mini Squidward. The majority of the episode is watching Squidward’s life get replaced by a puppet. The dance sequence is unfunny and the majority of the episode is stupid. Overall, I rate this episode is 0/5. SCUMBOB!

Well to be fair, I found SpongeBob playing charades with Mini Squid and Patrick’s cameo funny but the rest is garbage.

with this topic being bumped, i have something somewhat interesting to point out. the music critic offers the puppet squidward a sequin suit in one scene, which horribly upsets squidward. in the spongebob musical, during squidward's big number, guess what he's wearing? a sequin suit. not really relevant at all, but i thought it was kinda cute. he finally got the suit he wanted =D

on topic though, this episode was traaaaaash.

Seriously hope you can't get in trouble for bumping an episode discussion page.

This is only like a few months, not that big, talking about a bigger scale.

And yeah Squid Wood sucks.

Pretty bad episode. The Squid torture was uncalled for, it had basically no jokes, and it seemed like the whole universe was out to get Squidward. I do like the plot, though.

I can't stand this pile of garbage. Let's start with the plot. Spongebob wants to play with Squi-Wait, what?! He wants to play with Squidward? WHAT THE (DOLPHIN NOISE) HAPPENED TO PATRICK? Anyways, the fact that a puppet ruined Squidward's life is stupid. Very stupid. The humor-nonexistent. There's nothing funny about this episode. A Squid Wood rant isn't a Squid Wood rant if you don't mention the horrible and boring dance filler. Last time I saw this, I nearly fell asleep. It's actually a little disturbing. I mean, they're shaking their butts right in front of the camera! This episode's also actually a little creepy. It just has that cringing feeling, and also, in the beginning if you don't remember, Spongebob is creepily staring Squidward while Squid was NAKED. That was seriously one of the creepiest faces on the show, but Boating Buddies beats all. Oh yeah, I HAVE to mention the ending. The music critic-I wanted to shoot him and stuff his bloody remains in a crowded box along with Le Spatula. They'd make good friends. Even I could be a better music critic. Oh yeah, when Spongebob introduced his puppet of HIMSELF, I literally wanted to cry. Anyways, just about every character in this episode was terrible. In conclusion. This is an awful episode, and if this isn't on your bottom 33, I'm sorry, but you're very sick.
Hey, you called me very sick!

I hate this episode. The only thing that made me chuckle even a little in this episode was the "hang up" joke, but other than that this episode is just devoid of any substance or charm. The characters are annoying, the plot is stupid, and it's just so bland.

Mainly liked that one quote from Squidward:

"Why take a cheap knock-off when you can have the original?"

This episode is about as soulless as Squid Wood himself. The plot comes to a halt at the Krusty Krab, when Squidward realizes that his puppet counterpart is taking over his life, and all the jokes we get just relate to Squid Wood's "superiority" over Squidward; it gets very predictable very quick, with nothing else interesting going on.
Not even like the beginning is that much better. It just consists of SpongeBob home-invading Squidward. At least in Good Neighbors, Spongebob actually had valid reasons for doing what he did, but here he just feels like an attention-seeker that doesn't value Squidward's emotions. Really the only joke that I laughed at was Squidward's reply, "game of hang up" to Spongebob suggesting that they play "hang man", and the design of Squid Wood is pretty good, but that's it. I really don't like this episode

This episode ended season 4 and i respect the critical reception but i actually thought this one was decent. Like Rule of Dumb this is one is funny on one side of me and boring on the other.

Nearing the end of season 4, we have "Squid Wood"! I did something a little different this time around for my review, rewatching the episode a day before and writing down some key points (to help not take as long to write my review and make it more accurate), so let's see if this leads to any noticeable differences in my review of this episode lol. In general, I think is a pretty fun and funny episode.

The beginning of this episode demonstrates once again why this show is educational lmao, because what kid's cartoon is talking about circadian rhythms like that? Speaking of the beginning of this episode, it's just funny because why is SpongeBob in Squidward's house. And his whole "I waited for you to stop sleeping like you asked" line is pretty funny and raises some...interesting questions. Yeah, I'd say this episode is the real beginning of SpongeBob's creepiness factor getting amped up to 11 (as is the big complaint in episodes such as "Boating Buddies", and I'm fine with it. SpongeBob's always been a bit of a little weirdo, this really isn't that much of a stretch for him. Anyway, the whole "I'll see you later" running gag, or whatever you want to call it, is nice because it shows the repetitiveness of Squidward's interactions with SpongeBob. The way SpongeBob just keeps appearing in Squidward’s life is just hilarious, and you can feel the way Squidward is going insane over it. I would too, if my neighbor literally showed up at my bed, in the ground, in my flower, in my art…just horrible, yet hilarious. I think the best one has to be when Squidward’s in the bath and SpongeBob’s pressed up against the window in the creepiest way ever. Squidward’s scream and visual expression is absolutely hilarious, especially together with the dramatic cue. A nice callback to “Have You Seen This Snail”, honestly. SpongeBob is very childish in this episode, given his obsession with “playing”, but I think it works fine.

After a few minutes, we get introduced to the eponymous wooden puppet of Squidward (Squid Wood, as I will be calling him, because I think it's hilarious). I'm cool with the episode taking some time to get to this point, because there needed to be an explanation for why SpongeBob made a Squidward puppet (or maybe not, since like I said we are entering the era of SpongeBob being hilariously creepy..."Squid's Visit" just wait til I get to you), and these first couple minutes are super funny anyway. Squidward's reaction to the puppet is also hilarious. Rodger Bumpass has got some lungs on him! Sean Schemmel is shaking in his boots as we speak. I also just love the voice of Squid Wood. It's nice to see Squidward be overjoyed by the puppet taking his role too, to the point of literally pole vaulting into his house for no reason. And the look that SpongeBob and Squid Wood share after that (and even better, when Patrick cameos in this episode and thinks that Squidward "shaved his beard") are great. They're almost like fourth wall breaks.

Moving on, once we get to the Krusty Krab things continue to be very enjoyable for me. I love the absolute awkwardness of Squidward handing the two customers their Krabby Patties. Like it's more awkward in-universe than out-of-universe, and I get no secondhand embarrassment from it, so maybe that's why I like it so much. I'm of two minds when it comes to how I feel about the townspeople in this episode. On one hand, the fact that they like a puppet more than the actual Squidward is jerkwad behavior, especially as they continually insult Squidward to his face. On the other hand, a lot of what the townspeople say in this episode is pretty funny. I also like that the breaking point for Squidward is once his ego and pride start getting wounded, especially once Nancy pulls out them $300. Like I understand getting mad after that one, like gimme that money! Anyway, once Squidward tries to get back to work, his fake cheer is just funny to me, especially once his parade is immediately rained on as he gets assigned to busboy duty. And don’t think I didn’t notice the song playing in the background of this part…title card to “Wet Painters”, anyone?

I love how random the plot becomes as Squid Wood just starts dancing. It's not particularly funny, but it is entertaining. Personally, I do not like watching people dance when I eat. Maybe I’m just traumatized by middle school though. Squidward trying to get into the dancing is pretty good though, especially with the audience reaction and their roasting. I also love all the water sound effects, they're very satisfying.

Finally, Squidward reaches his breaking point, and seeing him go ballistic is amazing. The wider shots of SpongeBob just staring blankly as Squidward attacks Squid Wood just make the whole scene so funny to me. And I love how the music agent just shows up out of nowhere (also did you know they were voiced by Tom Kenny? Usually I'm pretty good at recognizing Tom Kenny's voice, but man that threw me for a loop when I was looking at the credits for this episode). I love how delusional Squidward is when talking to the agent, it makes me think of "Culture Shock". And the music agent themself is just hilarious, they remind me of Monty P. Moneybags from "Artist Unknown".

I also really like the very ending of this episode, SpongeBob pulling out a new puppet SpongeBob. The laughing bit is just hilarious, because you know Squidward’s about to go insane, especially with those eye twitches (and especially because everything pretty much goes back to square one for Squidward). And even though SpongeBob’s laugh can be annoying, it very much is not in this last little bit. And when an episode ends with some Puka A, you know it’s probably a good ending (I have not sourced this statement, so don't quote me on that).

"Squid Wood" is a really great episode that I have no problems with at all. Whenever I rewatch season 4, it's definitely up in there. And as you could see by this review, this episode reminds me a lot of many other episodes. This is usually the case for any episode I watch, but I usually try to keep the other episode references to a minimum. This show has almost 300 episodes I think, so it makes sense that I'd be seeing similarities. Speaking of similarities, "Chef Bob" is quite similar to this episode, except in this episode Squid Wood is not a jerk and he doesn't turn on his creator. Anyway, because I have no real problems with this episode, and I enjoy it so much, this episode definitely deserves to be in the "Amazing" tier.
