"I dropped SpongeBob's toothbrush in the toilet and put it back without washing it" BEST PART.
10/10
10/10
this episode kinda reminds me of ''the secret box'' they have slightly similar plotsComing up next, we've got "The Pink Purloiner", which first off that's such a fun episode title. I feel like this episode is both forgotten and not. I think "Ol' Reliable" is pretty memorable, but the rest may not be. And that's fair. Nothing in this episode particularly stands out when I think of it. But that doesn't mean it's bad. I actually find this episode to be pretty good.
First off, I'm already happy that this episode shows SpongeBob and Patrick jellyfishing, because I feel like even though that's such an iconic hobby for them, we don't see them doing it that much. Just like SpongeBob's bubble blowing. I liked all the designs of the exotic jellyfish in this segment too. Watching SpongeBob exceed and Patrick fail at jellyfishing wasn't extremely entertaining, but as I always say it wasn't un-entertaining. And we got 3 beautiful backgrounds out of it too, with the sunset as SpongeBob looks on in triumph, later on at dusk with SpongeBob and Patrick at the bus stop, and, most beautiful of all, when SpongeBob and Patrick walk to their houses after being dropped off by the bus. Man, Bikini Bottom has a pretty good public transportation system...my hometown would never. The backgrounds in this episode are really just great, I love the shot of SpongeBob's house at night and then the next morning at day. They're standard shots but that just goes to show the quality of these backgrounds.
Anyway, it's during this next morning that the episode truly gets rolling, as SpongeBob's net ends up missing. And see, I love episodes like this, the ones with an air of mystery, or where a mystery is the whole plot. Please keep this in mind when I eventually get to "Patty Caper". Anyway, I love how I feel like a detective too, trying to solve the mystery alongside SpongeBob. And we get some pretty believable reasons as to why the culprit may be Patrick, given his dialogue from earlier. But we're not quite there yet, because SpongeBob isn't even suspecting him yet. I love the timecard of "one pair of pants later", that was pretty funny and creative. And then I love how with no preamble SpongeBob is telling Patrick about his stolen net, and the two start putting up posters (badly). The part where SpongeBob hijacks the news is pretty fun, especially once Mr. Krabs shows up for basically no reason. And then the part with SpongeBob and Patrick on the phone is pretty funny. And I love SpongeBob's little realization in bed, which returns us to the point I made earlier about an air of mystery and intrigue.
We're treated to another gorgeous background in the next scene, where SpongeBob tries to get Patrick to indirectly confess. This scene is absolutely hilarious, especially as SpongeBob grows increasingly frustrated and Confess-A-Bear starts sounding genuinely threatening lmao. And then once Patrick confesses his "secret", SpongeBob running around feeling disgusting is just too funny. Really, this episode has some woefully underrated comedy. I love when SpongeBob comes over to Patrick's rock and Patrick's like "don't come in, there's a radiation leak" like lol what. And then Patrick literally growing another arm just to reluctantly comply with SpongeBob's demands is great. This episode is also the source of a pretty popular gag of Patrick having "Nothing" on his to-do list. I thought that was a gag from season 3 until I started reviewing this episode and realized that not only had I not come across that gag yet, but it was in this episode.
I love SpongeBob dressing up in a disguise and sounding British to try and get Patrick to "confess" to stealing Ol' Reliable. And then I love his dramatics once he believes the truth has come out. Even better, I love Patrick's unflappability once he gets over his shock. See, unlike "The Secret Box", Patrick's attitude here is 100% justified. I also thought it was wholesome that Patrick went through all the trouble of making a gift for SpongeBob. And then the whole part where he decides to leave is hilarious, especially with Patrick's trumped up vocabulary. I don't know where this trend of Patrick speaking super sophisticatedly when he's miffed or is saying goodbye or something of the sort came from, because it's all over these season 4 episodes, but I love it.
And then I love the ending of the episode and the final reveal that SpongeBob left his net on the bus. I also think it's hilarious that apparently this is something that has happened before. Not just leaving the net, but also all the dramatics that followed. I love how Nat is completely over this (I also love the continuity of Nat being the bus driver). And then the episode ends nice and wholesomely with SpongeBob and Patrick going and jellyfishing again.
"The Pink Purloiner" is a really good episode that I honestly have no problems with. It makes me wonder why I've always had it in my "Good" tier, then. Because the plot is great, the humor is great, the atmosphere is great, and no one annoys me even though this is an episode where SpongeBob and Patrick fight. So that's pretty impressive because I usually end up very annoyed with one of the parties involved, typically Patrick. The only bad thing I can say about this episode is that the very beginning of it is a little dull. But other than that, this episode's great! I'd say it works well in my "Amazing" tier, because I don't think I can justify putting it in "Great".
