I said I'd do this one a long time ago. Recently I've been pretty busy with it being the end of my 8th grade year, my new Tweek plushie's long awaited arrival, field trips, and learning how to cook for summer, along with some other things I'd prefer to not mention right now. But all I have to say is I am finally getting to it! For all the were waiting, which I know one person in particular, @Spongeblobmaster , was waiting for.
This one will be a long one...
I've decided on switching up the way I rate episodes, sometimes I will chronologically rate them, but sometimes I won't. I feel like this'll help a bit with some clarity issues in the past. But anyway, onto the episode.
This episode I'd consider it notorious and often hated by the SpongeBob community, one of the commonly hated early-season episodes along with I'm With Stupid, Grandma's Kisses, and Party Pooper Pants (along with a few more...), but I've actually never had a dislike for this one. In fact, I've always kind of liked it, in a way. In fact I don't think there's any pre-movie episodes that I hate. I know everyone says that "because it's the golden era", but that's not my reason. I just don't hate any pre-movie episodes.
Let's start with the title card. The title card music is used a few times throughout the episode, the track is called "Daytime Drama". I've always loved this track, even as a little kid, watching this episode for the first time. I don't know exactly why I liked it so much, but I think one reason was because it was unique to this episode, it was never used again after Dumped. I like when there's something unique to an episode, something that helps me remember the episode. Whenever I hear the track now, I can always remember that it came from Dumped.
There's many reasons people hate this one, but I saw @GetWelded 's list and thought I'd look at a few of the reasons.
First off this is one of the earlier "Patrick's a Prick" episodes we get to see, along with "I'm With Stupid", another notorious pre-movie episode like I mentioned earlier. And while rewatching I honestly don't understand why they had to add this to Patrick's character. He was a perfectly good character in many episodes, like for example, Opposite Day in Season 1. Seeing Patrick get all mad is funny, seeing him as an inconsiderate jerk is really not. It just makes Patrick seem like less of a best friend and more like an antagonist. It's the same exact reason episodes like "Stuck in the Wringer", "Pet Sitter Pat" "Big Sister Sam" and "The Card" are hated by many. But why didn't it bother me this time? I've actually been asking myself this a bit, because for anyone who saw my Stuck in the Wringer review, I hate that episode with all my heart. Hate it. But for some reason I like Dumped.
My reasoning is because this episode was different than the others for me. It felt more like some kind of "serious" played out episode, a big contrast from it's sister, Survival of the Idiots. I put serious in quotes because of how melodramatic it is, but I don't really find this episode to be all that funny. I can't really tell what they were going for with this one, was it supposed to be funny? Sad? I don't really know, but I liked it more for it's uniqueness among season 2 than it's comedy value, there wasn't another Season 2 like this. So I enjoy watching it. For the same reason I like watching Have You Seen This Snail, it wasn't funny, but it was a change-up. My friend, mentioned earlier, might not be happy hearing me say that, I know how much he hates Dumped and how much he loves Have You Seen This Snail, but one thing Have You Seen This Snail did much better was excluding the "Patrick's a Prick" element unlike Dumped. Like he said:
I also heard Get Welded mentioning the plot twist and the reasoning behind Gary leaving. Like I mentioned earlier, it's another element that Have You Seen This Snail does better. The plot overall. I mean, sometimes I do have to remember Gary is a snail (which are like cats to them) and cats do really like food. I've had strays follow me for food before (which I can't help but give them some, I love cats), but snails, if they are like cats, are probably similar. In fact, in both episodes, Gary left for something to do with food. Relatable honestly I've done the same. In fact I've heard people calling Gary a jerk in this episode, which is understandable in a way... he is a snail but he also shown to be intelligent in episodes like Sleepy Time like @Pugs4Thugs said.
But there's one last thing I'd like to get to and that is something my mom actually brought up. Me and my mom getting along, almost unheard of, but it does happen every once in a blue moon. She brought up that the plot of this episode might be hard hitting for divorced parents. I never really thought of it like that, but it wasn't a bad point either. It was actually a pretty good point to look into. I thought I'd bring it up in my review. But she also said this episode was annoying and couldn't wait till it was over.
So for my overall rating of this episode, I'd give it a solid 6/10 for being unique, and overall, a hated episode that I'll always like a little bit.

Honestly a lot of these are super valid reasons to hate this one, so I'm not saying I don't understand why it's hated, I completely get it.- Jerkoff Patrick
- Gary left SpongeBob for NO REASON
- the ending plot twist was stupid
- Larry and Rex dumping SpongeBob
- Patrick calling SpongeBob "pathetic" for missing Gary left me so *DOLPHIN NOISE*ing angry i grunted like Squidward in Club SpongeBob after the conch shell kept telling him no

I couldn't have said it better. It's around the same plot/premise, just one of them did it better and the other one is Dumped.this episodes is just have you seen this snail done wrong

This review actually switched my opinion about this, I kinda forgot about Sleepy Time before reading this .but as shown in Sleepy Time he very clearly has a mind of his own, so why exactly are his actions being guided by a cookie????
