Ah, I’ve heard much about “Squidferatu”. And, as is the case for episodes that engage in clear references like this one does, the things I’ve heard about it are split between love of the reference and hate of the reference. By now, y’all already know which side I fall on so I won’t even waste time talking about that. Instead, I’m going to spend more time being sad that I’m reviewing this episode in November and not October haha. Speaking of, I quite adore this title card music.
This poor mailman is always going through it. And you know what, I can appreciate a character that’s even more of a butt-monkey than Squidward. The plot of this episode is that Squidward gets Nosferatu’s (cue lightning) mail by mistake, apparently not even for the first time. I’m immediately interested. SpongeBob, hanging out in Squidward’s trash can, finds out that Squidward not only got Nosferatu’s mail, but was about to commit a federal crime to which he’d be an accessory. Ah, my kind of humor. I really like the expressiveness of this scene.
So now SpongeBob and Squidward prepare to go to Nosferatu’s castle, with the bucket loads of mail that have been incorrectly sent to Squidward’s house. Okay, calling it now, this is either a joke about how modern Nosferatu kinda looks like Squidward, or it’s about Squidward’s nose. The blood joke was definitely not something I ever expected from this show (since when did this show even reference blood lol), but I loved it. More disturbing horror jokes like that please. For me!
Y’all already know what I’m about to say…atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere! This episode took a cue from “Squid Noir” and completely changed up the color grading to make things even cooler. And the town itself is full of all sorts of fun characters and visuals, and I love that too. I really wish I was watching this on Halloween…I guess I’ll just add it to the marathon for next year. I feel like I’m not even saying enough about the episode, but what is there to say other than this is very entertaining to me?
SpongeBob and Squidward finally reach the castle, where they see Nosferatu, who still loves flickering the light switch. And with him is Slappy, who I won’t say much about because I’ll be discussing him in my review of this episode’s sister. So let’s just put a pin in that. I love how Nosferatu is animated in these newest episodes, it fits the show quite well, as it’s always had this quasi-live action animation. I love how Squidward and Nosferatu end up being quite similar when it comes to their shorter, laugh-prone companions.
Much to Squidward’s dismay, the two can’t leave due to it raining (I do like the reveal that the rain was just from Slappy’s pet cloud…I suppose we could call this continuity from “Stormy Weather” in a way. And beyond that, it’s a horror vibe). And of course, Squidward, in having any expectations for a quality time at all, is doomed to the worst the universe can offer. Once we get to the night time scene, I literally can’t stop laughing. Especially with the flickering lights thing. It’s then revealed that Nosferatu is trying to drink Squidward’s blood (though I’m sure this will be revealed as a misunderstanding), so now it’s time for SpongeBob and Squidward to get the H outta dodge, which is a scene full of all sorts of fantastic gags. As I suspected, it is eventually revealed that all of this is indeed a misunderstanding, with Nosferatu just trying to give Squidward his mail back…what a nice guy.
For some reason, it took until the very end of the episode for me to realize that this episode is a reference to “Graveyard Shift”. I mean, I already knew that this episode was using Nosferatu, obviously, but I saw it more as an episode using Nosferatu, not an episode referencing the plot of “Graveyard Shift”, you feel? But it makes sense. That’s why Squidward and SpongeBob are the main characters. And, of course, that’s why we get this very ending joke with the lights flickering. Oh, Phantom of the Opera, you kidder you!
I love how expressive “Squidferatu” is, that’s easily one of the best things about this episode. And I mean that in every way, from visual gags to simple visuals in general, to animation. I love this episode as a Halloween special, and simply as an episode. Definitely one of the best I’ve seen in a while.
Episode Tier: Amazing
Episode Score: 9.6/10
