198a. Sharks vs Pods

This was a pretty nice episode. It wasn't too funny but I enjoyed the sharks and I liked SpongeBob here. I can't say too much about it, other than the dance scene at the end, which was so weird but it was pretty funny at the same time. the background animation in dance scenes were awesome, I reallu enjoyed it. It wasn't too special for me but I did enjoy it enough.
Grade: B

I liked this episode. It wasn't as good as CBDP but I enjoyed it. I loved the ending. 9/10

Season: 9

Episode: Sharks vs. Pods

This episode was very good. The plot was nice. The sharks and pods were cool. The dance sequences were amazing. There were some funny jokes. 8.5/10

Well, I finally got to watch the episode and I've got to say this might be one of my favorite episodes of season 9. Most of the jokes were funny and the twist where, instead of a fight, there was a dance off between the sharks, pods, cops (who had some sort of british/west european accents) and the "IA". I really liked that part a lot. The characters were great and the animation was very cartoony (it is a cartoon after all). Squidward was grumpy again, unlike in The Fishbowl where he was super happy/zany. Overall, this episode gets a 9-9.5/10. Easily one of my favorites of the past 4 seasons.

8/10 I liked the idea of SpongeBob joining a "mob", and it was executed good. What I didn't like was the random "everybody turns out to be a group of dancers". I thought that was weird. And the explanation for the "crimes" was sort of rushed.

I remember when this episode was still in storyboard mode so this is really a fast forward in time.

You think they would have a better name than just their species. Omg SB's face when he was skipping to the car. So I guess the cops have scottish accents now and that shark with the reddish hair sounds familiar to me. It's nice to hear differentish voices for once though.

Woah, nice throwback to SB's hydro-dynamic spatula and the Krabs picture on the wall gave me s4 feelings. I also liked how The Sharks made that cut out letter but signed their names at the end.

"I'm ready" is finally back!

And a quick cameo by Reg and other Salty Spitoon characters
I liked that twist actually, usually the show goes forward with criminal characters but this was a nice slight change.

The dances are so funny and dumb, this is great.

I wish SB's dance was longer though, or that any of them were. But this was nice ep overall but what Fa said on SBC, it felt like it just happened.

Those are Irish accents. :) The familiar Shark voice was Clancy Brown, he was the only Non-Happy Days shark.

this episode was so much fun to watch. i loved it. honestly i think that this is the best episode pairing of 9b so far.

Well, the episode was kinda fun...
Not really a 10/10 but it was ok.

A great, refreshing, and pretty funny episode, and the better of the pair.

9/10

The animation in this episode was the best I've ever seen in a Spongebob episode since season 1.

You guys all remember WhoBob WhatPants, right? You remember how that episode was a slapdash piece of crap episode that tried to combine an affectionate parody of 50's stylings and also an emotional story about bringing SpongeBob home? You all remember how stupid and terrible it ended up being and how it failed at doing both of those things? You remember the seething rage and hatred it inspired in me because it was another case of the writers utterly failing to deliver on something that could've been good? You remember how HARD IT SEEMED TO MESS UP A CONCEPT LIKE THAT BUT THEY DID IT IN ONLY 22-

Ahem. Sorry. Still a little bitter about that one. Anyway, the concept of this episode is basically, "What if we focused on only one element of that and made it not suck?", and it passes with flying colors.

What's the reason for that? Well, it's simple: Focus. Sharks v. Pods doesn't try to shoehorn a group like the Bubble Poppin' Boys into an episode where they don't really belong and can't be utilized to their fullest, it dedicates a whole episode to riffing on and parodying the 50s era, The Outsiders and dance movies in general, and that focus is what makes the episode better than making a mere plot element in a totally different episode. Sure, it's really random and comes out of nowhere, but it's funny, and it is so effective in what it does that it's hard not to admire it.

Whether it's Patrick screaming "WE SAVED THE REC CENTER!", the blades being replaced with hair care products, or just that fantastic dance sequence at the end (and the pods had me laughing out loud with their interpretive garbage), it makes fun of those Grease-types, not in a Simpsons-way, but in a SpongeBob way, playfully shoving it's subject matter rather than tearing into it. The twist in the middle is just plain funny, and I have the same thoughts on the episode as a whole. It's fun, funny, loose, light, has great animation and gags (how can you not love "I just mopped the floor with you", or Sharkface brushing his teeth?), cameos from Reg and the hydrodynamic spatula, and boundless Sherm Cohen influence - what more could you want?

9/10

now if you'll excuse me it's time to revert into my cynic Jibbix persona

(wow 1000 posts)

Who doesn't remember me and my ugly close up?:*

Definitely my favorite of the week. The sharks were really awesome and entertaining and SpongeBob joining them was very fun to watch. The end dance was also really cool!

This episode was a fine episode, but - strangely - it felt a little dull, probably because there isn't much action (Or background music, my mind says) to go by. Or because it was all at night. Also, stereotypical Scottish police.

The only thing that's really distracting? The explaining for the fangirls/fruit seller at the end felt a little forced/crammed in, but I let it slide easily. Also, the end shot of the nightclub flashback lingered a little longer than it should. (Yay, Nitpicking.)

I would also like to point out the references to "No Weenies Allowed" made with the tough guys. They're really on the ball with them now!

Score: 7/10

P.S. If you use headphones and recorded this from TV, did the audio mixing sound a little strange to you (Specifically, the jukebox music at the beginning almost only being on the RIGHT SIDE!?)

Cheers to the next two days! (My guesses for the rest, since I was right so far: CbDp: 5 or 8/10, Sold: 4 to 6-7/10
Yes, we did that intensionally in the mix, to give it a cheap old Juke sound.

Well, I gotta say, this was a very great episode with some nice faces from SpongeBob, great use of guest characters, and awesome dance sequences. I was expecting Squidward and other of his own species to be part of the Pods. The ending was very unexpected but funny. I notice that the animation had been steadily getting much better as this new era progresses. So much better than I had edited Animation Bump section of SpongeBob to include this:

As of season 9 (mainly with the return of Stephen Hillenburg), the animation is more fluid than it was the past few seasons due to converting to HD. It gets more noticeable in episodes made after Sponge Out of Water, especially in the later ones (like the dance sequences in Sharks vs Pods, which was animated by David Gemmill).
Not to toot our own horn, but I'm going to. The animation and acting are do Marc, Myself and our fabulously talented crew. It took us awhile to convince Steve to ease off of "On Model" worries. But he is certainly digging the results.
I'm surprised no one noticed, or if so, did not point out, the moment when SB actually jumps the Shark. Or in this case sharks. :)
