"MuscleBob BuffPants" is another episode I didn't realize people were so divided on until I started looking through these forums. Frankly, I always thought this was a universally loved episode, but now I can see that there are many people who don't like it. And honestly, I agree with many of their points. However, I still like this episode, even if it isn't anywhere near my favorites.
The beginning of this episode is good, but I think it goes on a bit too long, which means the plot takes a bit too long to get started. I enjoy SpongeBob and Sandy's dynamic here, and I think this episode does a good job in further establishing their exercise hobbies, even if it isn't really about karate just yet. I also like that this episode builds on what we already saw in "Help Wanted" and "Ripped Pants", with SpongeBob being laughably weak.
I think where this episode somewhat falls apart for me is when SpongeBob gets his anchor arms, particularly during the scene where he's stuck at his seat because of a drink. It's just frustrating and unpleasant watching SpongeBob try and fail to get up while Sandy signs him up for the competition. And if you know anything about me, you'd know that there are a few things I can't stand when watching something: secondhand embarrassment, unnecessary anxiety, and being frustrated.
The episode improves after this though. I enjoyed the little gag of the measuring guy trying and failing not to get hit by the anchors. And even though secondhand embarrassment is high in SpongeBob's segment, the shenanigans he and the arms get up to make up for it a bit by being visually interesting and entertaining. I also like the ending of this episode, I thought it was pretty funny.
"MuscleBob BuffPants" feels like a worse version of "Ripped Pants" in many ways, which is unfortunate. It doesn't help that this episode came so soon after the latter. I think this episode would've been better if they cut down on the parts that dragged and had some more varied gags.
In my overall season 1 review, I put this episode just barely in my "Great" tier, and I'm a bit conflicted on where to put it now. Sometimes, I feel like it should be bumped down but keep essentially the same score, and other times I feel like it should be in my "Great" tier. After weighing it out though, I think I'll bump this episode down a tier. It just annoys me for a bit too long at many points. Which is too bad.
