11a. MuscleBob BuffPants

2/10

I really don't like this episode. SpongeBob acts the worst here, Sandy entering SpongeBob without asking, all the jokes try too hard, the plot doesn't work, yeah. You can basically tell I don't like this episode. The only good thing really is the commercial, but even then the commercial is just "good". It's not that hilarious, it's just chuckleworthy. I also always cringe when I see this episode. Overall, not a good episode.

I think this episode is the funniest of the season. That arm crunch joke is seriously laugh-out-loud funny! I also really like how Spongebob is portrayed here. He has a certain goal he wants to set, and when he "succeeds", his ego really starts to show, but I like it because it makes Spongebob feel less like a nice-guy archetype and more dimensional as a character.
So yeah, a great episode.

Now this is the definition of a very boring, bland and unfunny episode. No jokes were funny and there were no highlights.

"MuscleBob BuffPants" is another episode I didn't realize people were so divided on until I started looking through these forums. Frankly, I always thought this was a universally loved episode, but now I can see that there are many people who don't like it. And honestly, I agree with many of their points. However, I still like this episode, even if it isn't anywhere near my favorites.

The beginning of this episode is good, but I think it goes on a bit too long, which means the plot takes a bit too long to get started. I enjoy SpongeBob and Sandy's dynamic here, and I think this episode does a good job in further establishing their exercise hobbies, even if it isn't really about karate just yet. I also like that this episode builds on what we already saw in "Help Wanted" and "Ripped Pants", with SpongeBob being laughably weak.

I think where this episode somewhat falls apart for me is when SpongeBob gets his anchor arms, particularly during the scene where he's stuck at his seat because of a drink. It's just frustrating and unpleasant watching SpongeBob try and fail to get up while Sandy signs him up for the competition. And if you know anything about me, you'd know that there are a few things I can't stand when watching something: secondhand embarrassment, unnecessary anxiety, and being frustrated.

The episode improves after this though. I enjoyed the little gag of the measuring guy trying and failing not to get hit by the anchors. And even though secondhand embarrassment is high in SpongeBob's segment, the shenanigans he and the arms get up to make up for it a bit by being visually interesting and entertaining. I also like the ending of this episode, I thought it was pretty funny.

"MuscleBob BuffPants" feels like a worse version of "Ripped Pants" in many ways, which is unfortunate. It doesn't help that this episode came so soon after the latter. I think this episode would've been better if they cut down on the parts that dragged and had some more varied gags.

In my overall season 1 review, I put this episode just barely in my "Great" tier, and I'm a bit conflicted on where to put it now. Sometimes, I feel like it should be bumped down but keep essentially the same score, and other times I feel like it should be in my "Great" tier. After weighing it out though, I think I'll bump this episode down a tier. It just annoys me for a bit too long at many points. Which is too bad.

Episode Tier: Good
Episode Score: 7.8/10

i didnt really enjoy this episode, i found it to be pretty boring. i agree that it does feel like a worse version of ripped pants. this episode also hints at the ''spandy'' ship, just wanted to point that out

Really? I didn't really see that at all. If anything I'd say "Ripped Pants" hints at that ship, but I don't really agree with that either.

Ah yes, the episode where Spongebob gets tormented by Sandy in the end. (You know the TV channel scene) If I wrote the episode, this would be the end:

Spongebob: "97...98...99...100.... Finally. I switched 100 channels! See, I am strong after all." i swear to god this isn't inappropriate please don't restrict me
Sandy: "I want 100 more."
Spongebob: "1...2..3..4.5678910" *starts babbling numbers*
Sandy: "Sponge...bob?"
Spongebob then breaks the TV remote in half. "TOO LONG HAVE I BEEN TORMENTED BY YOU. YOU CROSSED THE LINE. THIS ISN'T FUNNY ANYMORE. SAY GOODBYE SANDY."
Spongebob throws the TV remote, and it flies so fast it breaks through the tree, and flies through Sandy's dome.
Sandy: "SPONGEBOB! LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE!"
Spongebob: *deranged laughter*
Random Incidental Fish: "Ah, what a nice da-*Sandy's TV remote hits the fish* Wha- Who just threw a TV remote at me?"

Am I the only one who finds this one to be among the most underappreciated episodes of the show? I thought every joke landed and the concept I thought was quite a good one.

9.5/10
