So like I said in the last review, I hardly remember this episode. I remember SpongeBob skipping…something. I thought it was work but with a title like this, I’m thinking it’s Boating School. And I remember he did this because of something to do with Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. But that’s it. Before I rewatched this episode, I wouldn’t be surprised if I hadn’t sat down and watched this episode in at least 5 years. Probably longer than that.
Given that I’ve already explained how Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy aren’t exactly inherently enjoyable to me, the fact that this episode starts out with them gives me a bad feeling in my gut. They aren’t bad for an episode by default, but the fact that I’ve already forgotten about this episode anyway tells me that I’m probably not going to greatly enjoy what I’m about to see. I also realize, especially once the main conflict of the episode is revealed, that this episode is going to heavily lean into the child-SpongeBob side of the child-adult line, which I’ve also already explained is not the side of the line I like to be on. But again, none of this means the episode is going to be bad. It just means it’s got some hurdles to cross, and that it’s at a disadvantage.
The episode surprises me by having Patrick be the one coming up with actually useful plans to get SpongeBob to get his book signed. And SpongeBob continually shooting them down is not a very entertaining scene, but I latch on to the Patrick thing enough to kind of give things a pass. The scene continues to be kind of dull though, even when Patrick goes and drinks all of SpongeBob’s sparkling water. The fact that the first couple minutes of this episode has such a focus on going to the bathroom is…a choice. That’s all I have to say on that.
I’m actually yet again surprised by this episode having SpongeBob and Patrick get their books signed pretty quickly, because I was really expecting the plot to be SpongeBob struggling to get over there. But that just means the plot must be the opposite—him struggling to get back. And of course, I’m right about this. After getting this small taste of ditching, SpongeBob’s increasingly tempted by other fun things going on. Honestly, I wish skipping class could be this fun. Clearly, this episode is leaning into SpongeBob being very young, because skipping class is only this exciting to…high schoolers LMAO. In college, at least in my experience, most people skip class if they’re studying their butt off, or if they just mentally cannot. So…not exactly fun. I’m just glad that this episode doesn’t set off my time anxiety lol.
This episode also doesn’t set off my laughing either, because this episode isn’t particularly funny. But it is at least entertaining. Seeing SpongeBob’s inner conflict is at least interesting, and I think it’s kinda funny (not comedy funny) that literally everyone is tempting him. Even Sandy, who usually acts as a voice of reason. Speaking of Sandy, I like that this episode includes her, because by this point this show has gotten quite egregious with how they underutilize her, and I don’t like it. I can’t wait until I get to later seasons. Anyway, this scene on the beach is pretty entertaining. It gets especially good once the cops show up. I didn’t realize one of my favorite reaction memes (”scum like you make me sick…cuff him”) came from this episode lol. That moment is also just funny. And I love how it ties right back into the main plot of the episode, that was some pretty good writing if I do say so myself.
And then we get SpongeBob finally having his guilt catch up with him, and he runs back to class, with some fun visuals to boot. I’m just glad the episode is finally staying consistently entertaining. The first few minutes were a drag, but the rest of it is pretty good. I love SpongeBob’s determination to get back to class to return the key. And then I love the twist of the episode with Mrs. Puff getting arrested for skipping out on jury duty lol. Remember when Mrs. Puff getting arrested was a complaint about modern SpongeBob? Wild.
"Ditchin'" is...good. Yeah, it's good. Which actually ended up surprising me because the episode was so dull for so long. But once SpongeBob and Patrick get their books signed, things do improve and I find myself enjoying what I'm watching, even if the episode isn't very strong with the comedy. Well, it has it's moments I suppose. But yeah, I think this episode works well as a low "Good"-tier, just barely making it over the edge.
