Where does Squidward's ink come from?

And why doesn't he use it more often? He could easily drive Spongebob and Patrick away with it. Or is it just an uncontrollable reflex? Can Squidward ink on his own volition?

Oddly enough, on the 1st SB movie DVD, Stephen Hillenburg says in a documentary thing that he didn't have Squidward ink because it looked like pooping.

The few times we've seen him ink it seemed like an involuntary reflex because he was scared or angry. Maybe he can ink deliberately but doesn't bother because he knows SpongeBob and Patrick wouldn't stay away for long anyway.
