Hillenburg says that Squidward is an octopus and the reason he only has 6 limbs is because it's easier to animate. I accept that, and hey, nearly every other octopus on the show is the same way so it's easy enough to assume that octopuses in the SpongeBob universe are 6-legged.

But then what's the deal with these guys? :notetoself:

He lost them in the war.

I posted something similar to this, that topic is obviously too old to bump.
But I pretty much asked if there was a difference between octopi like Squidward
and octopi like... the ones in Walking Small and Sailors Mouth.

Maybe only octopuses with big noses have 6 limbs instead of 8, like all of them in Cephalopod Lodge and Squidville :P

Hmm. Maybe they're different species of octopus? Or maybe he just lost them at some point. Given all the physical Squidward abuse we see, it may not be an unlikely possibility. :P

I agree that Squidward may have missing limbs because the creator, Stephen Hillenburg, said that he is an octopus, yet people keep saying he's a squid. It is kind of annoying if you ask me, although I wonder if Squidward could be considered a hex-opus.

IRL I think it's common for octopi to have different numbers of limbs.
Only if they've had an accident and lost an arm or more. All known species of octopi have 8 arms, hence "octo".

I honestly agree that for the sake of animation and design, giving Squiddy just 6 was a good call.

I figure that Hillenburg thought it would be tough to animate Squidward WALKING if they gave him 8 arms/legs. In those scenes none of the octopi are in motion.

Just reminded me of something: The question of Squidward's number of limbs comes up rather frequently.. But what about Krabs? He has two claws and two legs... where are the rest? He lost even more limbs than Squidward did.

Larry as well, he lost a number of legs.

If he can squirt ink, it's possible that one of his family members were a squid. Thus why he only has 6 limbs.

Not to mention that Spongebob can grow fingers/arms/legs seemingly at will.
Patrick too. Though I can't remember if he ever actually did outside of "Karate Star".
