Squidward has just destroyed Sponge and Pat's friendship, Patrick has proclaimed Squidward to be his new best friend, and Gary has retreated into his shell.

Spongebob defensively claims that he has lots of other friends to hang out with

then proceeds to draw little faces on his fingers

He tries to console himself

only to end up quietly sobbing alone

Either this episode happened before Spongebob met Sandy.... or he really doesn't have many friends at all. Spongebob is a friendly, amiable guy, but how many friendships does he REALLY have beyond shallow, surface-ish ones?

I think Spongebob has a lot of acquaintances, since so many people seem to know who he is and are usually friendly enough to him. But maybe not a lot of close friends...didn't this episode air after Tea at the Treedome? Maybe Spongebob and Sandy just weren't close yet.

The scene was literally implying that beyond Patrick, Spongebob doesn't have any real friends. Acquaintances, but no one he can just call up one day to say "hey, let's hang out today!"

True.... maybe he and Sandy weren't as close at that point.
