There is one fascinating piece of concept art I saw from SpongeBob's early stages of production, back when he was still SpongeBoy. It's this one right here, it's cel art by Hillenburg:
Spongeboy_1984.jpg

Just out of curiosity. Someone says that this was drawn in 1993 (was it?), although some sources say his first sketches trace back in 1986. This whole oral history confused me here at one point. Looks practically the same from the final product.

Anyway, any more info about this concept art would be appreciated. I always find some fascinating stuff about early concept art. ;)

I know that's actually a cel that was used in the show, but when SpongeBob was SpongeBoy he always wore a green hat, so...
Yeah, I'm confused too.

That cell was used in "Home Sweet Pineapple", so I'm confused by your question...? If it was from before the show started production, it would match the rest of the early sketches from Hillenburg, and that's definitely not the same style.

I just found out about this "cel animation". He didn't wear a green hat in the episode though, did he? IIRC he didn't.

Sounds like some classic SB Wiki info you've got there.

That's just a regular cel from Home Sweet Pineapple, as 11th said

So, that's not a "concept" drawing.. that cel was actually used in the actual episode.

Hillenburg almost certainly did not paint the cel, and that cel was probably done in late 1998 or early 1999.

Aha! That explains everything! ;)

well the reason he is called spongebob is because there was already a cartoon named spongeboy and so they changed the
y to a b.

SpongeBoy was going to wear his Krusty Krab hat 24/7 since he loved it so much. But yeah what abney said.

Oh, wow, you're right.

Is it bad if I remember this episode well, but I didn't remember him wearing a hat at all?

Why does Squidward look so weird?
Because Season 1 animation is extremely inconsistent. Which is why it's my least favorite animation

It's actually my favourite season, followed by Season 3.
He was focusing on the animation, not the quality of the season itself. I do agree that it's a great season, though.

I'm saying animation, not episodes

1. Either Season 3 or 4
2. ""
3. Season 9
4. Season 8
5. Season 5
6. Season 2
7. Season 6
8. Season 7
9. Season 1

You're both right! Some guy a few years ago tried to sue Stephen Hillenburg as he believed he had created the character first (and sold it as a cartoon) years before, although it wasn't called SpongeBoy it was Bob Spongee. He lost the case in 2008.

That's odd, because the year after he lost the case (late 2008-early 2009) was the darkest time of Spongebob..

I guess it's a coincidence, though it might be a message from the world beyond saying that it would have been better if the show was canceled- Luckily, it improved after season 7.
