Would kids still like SpongeBob if it starred adult HUMAN characters instead of anthropomorphic?

What if SpongeBob SquarePants wasn't a sponge, Patrick Star wasn't a sea-star, Squidward Tentacles wasn't an octopus, Sandy Cheeks wasn't a squirrel, Mr. Krabs wasn't a crab, Plankton wasn't a plankton, etc?

I think it would defeat the whole purpose of the show!

The fact the characters are anthropomorphic is what attracted them to the show in the first place!

Without the anthropomorphic characters, SBSP would have never got off the ground since most kids only want to watch cartoons with other kids as the protagonists

Also, SpongeBob may be an adult but he acts like a kid which makes a BIG difference

I think SpongeBob would be a female, Patrick might be a girl too, Squidward would be an African-American guy (and a pretty good looking one at that!), Sandy would be black too (got that from the SpongeBob musical) or Latina, and Mr. Krabs would be a badarse Navy veteran. Have no idea about Plankton, but Karen would look like Sara 2 from Toonami.

I like this. Totally down with the ethnic angle. I'd start watching SpongeBob a lot more often if this were the setup.

I like this a lot actually. I think it would be cool if Patrick were still a guy, just so we can have a platonic friendship between a man and a woman on a mainstream show lmao, I'm so tired of those always turning into ships.
