It seems like movies have been getting longer in the past few years. More and more movies are longer than 2 hours. A lot of them have been around 2 1/2 or 3 hours. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, but I think it's an interesting change. Personally, it's hard for me to watch a movie longer than 2 hours in one sitting. But I understand some movies may benefit from a longer runtime.

How do you feel about this change? What are some possible reasons why you think movies are getting longer?

One possible reason is the film studios want the customers to feel like they're getting their money's worth for their tickets since going to theaters can be expensive these days, along with all of the extra costs (like food, drinks, etc)

Another possible reason for longer movies is the customers' desire for movies to feel more like "events," if that makes sense

Honestly I'm fine with watching movies of any length (after all, you've probably binge watched 20 episodes of your favorite TV show straight at least once in your lifetime), as long as they are interesting enough to prevent me from falling asleep, but not too action-packed or anything where you can't catch a breath either for the entire runtime.

I also heard a reason for movies getting longer is that many movies these days have massive budgets and try to be a "complete package." For example, instead of an action movie just focusing on action, the producers will also try to put in many other elements like comedy, drama, spectacle, etc. With so much being put into a movie, it sort of has to be longer just to fit everything in.

At that point, they're putting in too much essentially...

People have shorter attention spans these days so it's surprising that they would make them longer
That's an interesting point. A lot of people say that people have shorter attention spans nowadays, and that they look at their phones during movies and interrupt other's viewings. But movies getting longer and longer may contradict this.
