Why Gary is a main character?

I'd consider him more of a side character, but I guess that because he lives with Spongebob he fits in with the other characters nicely and is able to make a decent amount of appearances.

He lives with SpongeBob, is one of his best friends, and is often the only character SpongeBob interacts with when he's at home. I think people underestimate Gary's importance.

But Gary is still a pet and he doesn't do anything except being a cat like mollusc. =/

He's Spongebob's pet, and he's funny when he's on screen most of the time.

Because Gary is a snail, which are underwater cats on SpongeBob, and cats are cute and adorable.

Heck, Sandy aside, he's the smartest character on the darn show now. :P

EDIT: Oh, who am I kidding? Sandy aside, he's always been the smartest character.

He's considered part of the main character because got at least 10 episodes focusing on him which is more compared to the other recurring characters (Mrs. Puff, Pearl, other citizens).
