At first it was just Patchy. Then in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie we saw that there is at least one entire crew that loves him. And in SpongeBob Comics it's a recurring theme that pirates are obsessed with SpongeBob Comics.

Do they see Painty the Pirate at the beginning of the theme song and get hooked in that way? Do they relate to the nautical setting and enjoy the sea shanty background music? Do they appreciate the light-hearted silliness because it gives them a break from the harsh realities of being a pirate?

I always assumed it was a combination of all of these things, especially the second one. The show seems to perfectly fit its finger on the pulse of the pirate demographic through its aesthetic and sense of humor.

The way they cried at the sunlamp scene, I think they all just like the characters and the humor. They went through a lot to get those tickets!

Burger Beard might not have liked SB, but his seagull friends did.

As much as I hated Sponge out of Water, I have such a soft spot for Burger Beard. I love all the hammy, camp-tastic pirates in the show, and I thought he was so adorable.

were the seagulls his friends? he didn't seem to like them too much.

He liked Kevin (I think that was his name) enough to sing the song at the end.

Pirates love the sea, and when the show takes place in their favorite location no wonder why they love Spongebob so much

I'm guessing that pirates would get a huge kick out of "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack." The whole show has a pirate/sailor motif, even moreso than Spongebob.

It's to match the nautical theme of the show.
Useless fact: Painty was originally a painting of a sailor Stephen Hillenburg took and repainted to look like a pirate. (You may remember that from reading the SB Experience book.)

I always thought it was the nautical theme that interested them so much, because they had ties to the sea and everything.

The theme song is sung by a pirate.

The show has an episode about pirates

An episode has pirates selling explosive pies.

An episode involves the main characters talking like pirates.

An episode has a bad pun about pirates.

The main villain of the second movie was a pirate.

One gag in an episode involves a style of wrestling called pirate wrestling.

The Flying Dutchman is a dead pirate.

His old crew were dead pirates too.

Mr. Krabs and his dad used to be a pirate.

Some of the production tracks sound very pirate-ish.

And most of all, the show's main fanatic is a pirate.

Along with the nautical theme of the show, this show was made for pirates and people of all ages.

Maybe the nautical theme and that SB is so pure in heart compared to their harsh pirate lifestyles that it amuses them. What I wanna know if Patchy ever interacts with fellow pirate SB fans or if he thinks he's too good for them. I think he might have had other pirate friends in Party Pooper Pants.
