Why do people love beaches so much?

They are nice to visit for a day, and they are nice to photograph, but making a week-long VACATION just to lay on a beach? What? That in my opinion is just boring, how can you lay and do nothing for a week. o.O

Beaches are great and pretty, but I also hate touristy beaches, as the essence of beaches are to be relaxing, and that is impossible in a huge majority of famous beaches unfortunately.

Also, beaches are hot, and I am one of those extremely weird people to like cool, overcast weather.

Also, I find it rather aggrivating when advantaged people vacation in Hawaii and LAY ON THE BEACH FOR A WEEK. Fine, maybe 1 or 2 days but there are VOLCANOES, rainforest, mountains, waterfalls, beautiful plants, amazing culture, beautiful drives, amazing recreational activites, world-class hiking, amazing wildlife, yet people go there for nothing but getting drunk on Waikiki Beach. It almost annoys me as much as people who go to a naturally diverse state like Alaska, take some overpriced cruise, and think they have seen Alaska. If you're going to waste flight tickets and hotel reservations like that, at least give it to me or someone who will actually see the state. :/

So, that's my two cents on why I feel beaches are overrated. I don't HATE them, but most of them are completely ruined by tourists; even the desolate beaches, I can spend time on and enjoy for a day, but I would rather spend a week in the wilderness of a land similar to the northern taiga and tundra rather than a beach.

I hate sand with a passion, so sandy beaches are a chore for me. Rocky beaches aren't so bad, because the rocks don't stick to you or get in your clothes. I like being near the sea and walking or sitting for a while.
I don't understand why people find it fun to lie on a beach all day, though. I'd be bored out of my mind.

I think when people take week long vacations to the beach, they are doing more than just "laying around."
For one, I actually go in the water at the beach and do fun stuff.

But usually there is other fun things to do when not at the beach. I know my family has taken week long vacations to the beach before and we didn't just sit around...

Laying around and swimming. Still not what I could consider too diverse for a week.

Fellow sand hater-with-a-passion! :D

Sand is extremely hot, can't call it relaxing.

Well, when I go on vacation this summer I'll have to let you know all the different things we do besides just sit around :p

Well I'm sure you do, you're Abney after all. :P

But I know SO MANY PEOPLE HERE who spend a fortune on vacations and when I ask them what they did, their response was "relaxed on the beach all day and went out for dinner everynight"

You could draw in the sand or practice cursive writing.

If all else fails build a series of giant sand castles and destroy the whole beach.

I think a lot of the attraction has to do with the fact that a lot of people don't live right next to a beach

Bu-bu... my main handwriting is already cursive.

I don't live anywhere near a beach, the closest one is Lake Ontario Beach Park in Rochester, and it is by far one of the most disgusting beaches ever. X(

But even then, the beaches I have gone to, I was bored to death and felt horribly uncomfortable in the scorching heat.

Beaches are filled with annoying tourists and jellyfishes
Volcanoes are filled with lavas
Forests are filled with amazing wildlife (which includes giant leeches, tarantulas, bullet ants and big cats)
Lakes are filled with deadly insects and nasty brain eating amoebas

You guys are making the beach sound terrible o.o

Personally, I like most vacations, except for places with NOTHING to do. Now, if I had to pick between going on a mountain trip and going to the beach, I'd pick mountains. I LOVE the mountains. Wonderful sights, wildlife, it's just great. Don't get me wrong, though, I still love the beach. I love (attempting) to surf and wake-board. But, laying in the Sun on the sand all day would be terrible. Also, I'm a little too old to be doing this, but I try to make giant, really deep holes...

Anyways, I agree with E.V.I.L. and DMAP: Sand is wayyyy too hot.

Yes, yes, I know he wasn't talking about the beach directly, but I was trying to brush aside all this meaningless anti-beach quarreling with a deep quote, okay?!

Biggest misconception: Alaska isn't a block of snow and ice. Temperatures in southern Alaska go above freezing in march and reach highs of 50-70. INTERIOR ALASKA summer highs reach 80-90. HUGE misconception that actually really makes me want to get out my llama army.
