Most shows switched to HD in the 2008 through 2010 criteria, however SpongeBob didn't switch to HD until summer 2012, with episode 179, even though we still had overdue SDTV holdovers from the eight season like Demolition Doofus, Face Freeze, The Good Krabby Name, Move It or Lose It, Super Evil Aquatic Villain Team Up Is Go, Chum Fricassee, and Hello Bikini Bottom. Even though still today not many people watch TV in HD, it still is strange that SpongeBob is one of the last shows to switch to HD, it also may confuse younger viewers to have a Widescreen HD Season 9 episode and a Letterbox Season 8 episode air on the same night.

I've never noticed, I don't have HD, but it probably looks odd. Probably development issues.

Its sad how HDTV has been around for 18 years, and only about 40% of people actually watch TV in High-Def, yet touchscreen smartphones have been around for 8 years, and 95% of people use them

Nickelodeon makes so little money these days due to how much they suck now. Also I'm pretty sure It's a SpongeBob Christmas was in HD. That episode is actually available on Blu-Ray.

Yeah. An 8 billion dollar, mega-popular worldwide franchise having budget issues of all things.

Given Nickelodeon I can buy that :p

To start off, I think Nick/Viacom was a little late catching on to the widescreen trend with their animated shows. They still stuck to fit with those who still had those bulgy CRT displays and those mostly without Nick HD. Yes, even the Beavis and Butt-head revival season in 2011 was 4:3 (but in HD). I'm sure they were just late or trying to save money.

Guys, you don't save any noticeable amount of money by having the digital animation done in SD instead of HD. The cheapest shows in the world can be HD no problem.

I agree I mean in starting in the early 2000s Warner Bros. Animation and Disney cartoons such as the DCAU shows Teen Titans, Xiaolin Showdown, Kim Possible, American Dragon Jake Long and more. Cartoon Network later caught onto this in 2005 starting with Camp Lazlo, however those shows were originally shown in SD and weren't released on HD until much later. Nickelodeon on the other hand it took them until around 2012 with Legend of Korra, Season 2 of Tuff Puppy and Season 9 of SpongeBob when they switched to HD.
