Who is the Real Supporting Main Character of SpongeBob?

Patrick is often portrayed as the secondary main character of SpongeBob, because he is SpongeBob's best friend and has a great number of appearances in the show. However, Squidward has 22 more appearances in overall episodes, coming in at 288 appearances, while Patrick has something like 266. Does this difference tarnish Patrick's reputation as the second main character? Personally seeing as many more episodes of new Sponge centers around Squid (and 75% of those are "Squidward Torture you-know-whats [not sure if I'd get a warning point for that]), and the fact that Pat is always overly-dumb, overly-mean, or both at the same time, I now count Squid as the main supporting character. What about you guys? We all know the list generally goes like
1) Sponge
2) Pat
3) Squid
4) Mr. Krabs
5) Gary
6) Sandy
7) Plankton
but should this list be changed?
 
Some of Squid's appearances are just there for him to be background except for maybe one scene (Pickles, Whale of a Birthday, The Wreck of the Mauna Loa) while Patrick is often used for the plot. Here's my list:

1. Sponge
2. Pat
3. Squid
4. Mr. Krabs
5. Plankton
6. Gary
7. Sandy
 
That's a good list. I think I would revise my list to have Gary on the bottom actually, since he only meows a couple times per episode. Sandy was much more of a main character in old spongebob, while plankton, after season 10, will probably have more appearances than Sandy. So yeah, after S10 your list should apply pretty well I think.

I think Plankton definitely has more appearances than Sandy, and sometimes Squidward is just there in the episode, like in Spy Buddies.
 
Since almost every episode is a KK one these days, I can understand Squidward appearing more often. My favorite episodes are when he gives snark comments and is basically a background character in the restaurant.

Actually plankton has something like 92 and sandy has 107, although this may have been updated. However I think the only reason for this is because Sandy can be used for a lot of cameo appearances, while Plankton usually has his own episodes centered on him. Plankton is catching up fast in appearances.

IKR like in "Pickles" he is just there so that Bubble Bass can comedically throw him out of the way XD

Kind of weird to see Sandy goes down to the bottom these days. When the idea at the beginning was to have this list;
1. SB
2. Patrick
3. Squidward
4. Mr. Krabs
5. Sandy

Now, personally up to season 9 I'd list it this way
1. SB
2. Squidward
3. Patrick
4. Mr. Krabs ties with Plankton
5. Sandy (hardly used still)

I agree with you almost completely; Sandy was supposed to be much more of a character in the old days. She was awesome in S1. Except one thing: Krabs still has 150 more appearances than Plankton. So I wouldn't tie them. That's all :)
 
I wouldn't class any of the non-SpongeBob characters as secondary main characters, but if I had to rank them by importance:

1. SpongeBob - No explanation needed.
2. Patrick - The character SpongeBob hangs out with the most. Causes a large portion of the trouble SpongeBob gets into.
3. Mr. Krabs - I don't like him as much as some of the other characters lower on this list, but he's very important simply because he's behind the Krusty Krab, which is a big part of the show and SpongeBob's life.
4. Squidward - Needed in order to make the Conch Street dynamic interesting. It would be a boring place if SpongeBob and Patrick didn't have somebody to annoy.
5. Gary - I think people underestimate his importance. Even though he mostly just hangs around the pineapple, he's needed so that SpongeBob has somebody to talk to (allowing the audience to hear his thoughts as a result) and get advice from.
6. Plankton - He has become a bigger character over time, but Season 1 shows that there are plenty of ways to do a Krusty Krab episode without him.
7. Sandy - Opposite to Plankton in a way. She got more of a focus in Season 1 but there aren't many kinds of episodes that really require her since SpongeBob already has another friend that is easier to use in plots.
