We know that Spongebob is the only cook at the Krusty Krab, and when he's not there, it happens that either Squidward or Mr. Krabs are in charge of frying them, but they almost always end up making a mess, or there simply isn't anyone in the kitchen to make Krabby Patties. However, there are some episodes where Spongebob isn't frying Krabby Patties, and yet someone is cooking them very well, so... Who's in the kitchen making Krabby Patties? In Bubble Buddy we see that Spongebob orders a couple of Krabby Patties for Bubble Buddy, and Squidward is the one who brings them to him, so we could assume that he was the one who prepared them. However, as we've seen in other episodes, Squidward doesn't know how to cook Krabby Patties, and when he takes Spongebob's place, he ends up burning them.

See now this is the type of question I think about all the time. I guess my "rule" (that I'm making up right now) is that any time it could reasonably be assumed to be Squidward making the patties, it's Squidward. If that can't be reasonably assumed, then it's Mr. Krabs. Pearl could even be a reasonable option. Or perhaps not all patties are made fresh lol.

It seems to me that it's a timeline problem =)

Maybe episodes like "Pickles", where Squidward can't cook Krabby Patties, happen before "Bubble Buddy" and other episodes, where he can finally make them.

I'm pretty sure somewhere in the show implied that it's either Squidward or Mr. Krabs that does it when SpongeBob isn't around. That's probably not a concrete answer though, the show was never really good at being consistent, so maybe a crewmember should answer this

Squidward usually is bad at cooking patties. But there's been a couple times he's been shown to be good or decent at it

I think it really just depends on what the plot of the episode calls for. If the episode is about how essential SpongeBob is to the Krusty Krab, Squid is going to suck at SpongeBob's job. If SpongeBob is just taking a day off, things are going to be fine without him. OFC this is more of a creative explanation since the show doesn't really run on logic

The patty vault has plenty, no?
oh yeah i forgot about the patty vault lmao.

edit: Then again, squidward acted like he had just discovered the patty vault in the episode (he at least looked surprised) and we'd seen him serve krabby patties while sponge was absent before then

hmm.. interesting. that is a very good point, this might the the best answer 🤔
