What was causing the sounds in "Idiot Box"?

Okay, am I the only one who finds the episode "Idiot Box" to be really strange or, heck, even slightly creepy?

So, basically Spongebob and Patrick were playing around with a box, and strange noises was heard (by Squidward), but every time Squidward opened the box to check, the sounds were gone and Spongebob and Patrick denied of ever making or even hearing them.

So, what do you think was causing these mysterious sounds? Was SB&P hiding something? or was it just part of Squidward's imagination?

My theory was always that SpongeBob and Patrick had ordered an invisible portal to the next dimension, under the disguise of a TV box. The SpongeBob and Patrick that he encounters in the box each time he opens it are actually their doppelgangers, protecting the portal from those who may wish to use it for evil. They make Squidward think it's all in his imagination and that's it's not really happening… but in reality the real SpongeBob and Patrick are no longer of this world, even though he can still hear them. At the end, Squidward is actually starting up the invisible portal. The Squidward that is thrown out of the box is the new doppelganger to replace the Squidward that went to the next dimension with the original SpongeBob and Patrick.

Squidward descending into insanity. The episode just ends at the dump. Past the fade out, it leads up to Squidward entering a mental hospital and committing suicide.
