Spongebob is such a cute, innocent, tiny little guy- when bad things happen to him, we just want to squeeze all the sadness out of him just to hear his goofy laugh again.

What are some moments when you wanted to give Spongebob a hug?

Pizza Delivery

Okay... the scene of Spongebob crying was a little overly-dramatic, but still. A customer verbally berated him in front of his superior, driving him to tears. Poor dude needed a hug. I guess Squidward brutally assaulting the customer with a pizza was almost as good, though.

Hall Monitor

When Mrs Puff berates Spongebob for his wrongdoings, he does... this.

awww

Walking Small

After an entire episode of being taken advantage of nearly EVERYONE, Spongebob finds out that Plankton used him... FOR LAND DEVELOPMENT!!!

that wasn't nice!

Suds

My mom watched this episode recently, and she had the most stereotypically mom-ish reaction. "Oh no, poor Spongebob, he's sick? He needs to go home and get into bed and eat lots of chicken soup! Poor baby!" D: It was kinda funny, but also pretty sweet.

Dying for Pie

Spongebob knits Squidward an adorable home-made sweater... which Squidward literally throws back in his face, causing Spongebob to cry.

Then he makes Squidward a new sweater, out of tears...

poor little feller

Squidward... you suck

Awww :( In Hall Monitor, he looks so sad and defenseless... And in Dying For Pie, I definitely wanna hug him, I mean, look at his face when Squidward throws the sweater back....

Come here SpongeBob, we love you!!!

The two I can think of are Dumped and Have You Seen This Snail. All he wanted was his snail back :(
I'm sure there are LOTS more. I'll post them when I think of them.

Something about Spongebob's design in general just REALLY engenders a desire to hug the shrimp out of him. Maybe it's because he's drawn with definitive child-like characteristics/mannerisms, and this creates a maternal reaction within our hearts...

Geez, "Dumped" was so hard to watch. I love Patrick Star immensely, but... that was his lowest point.

His lowest point was either The Card or Yours Mine and Mine. Consider those episodes to be Patrick's lowest point.

SpongeBob's crying in Pizza Delivery was best in my opinion, it just sounded more realistic then how he cries now.
And he's going to be crying like that in my fanfics, more realistically.

Also, how could you forget his face/appearance from Hall Monitor.

Aww, yeah he was so sad in the beginning of "Hall Monitor."

The crying scene in "Pizza Delivery" was sad, but it honestly sounded more like an operatic asthma attack than actual crying.

It sounds weird, but his most realistic crying IMO was in "Something Smells." Something about that scene broke my heart, especially since we didn't see his face up until the last second.

And his quiet sobbing in "Christmas Who." Maybe these ones hit me harder because they're a little more subtle? (Me, talking about subtlety in Spongebob. What a concept.)

Fools in April, after he ran away crying. When he lost his job and when he didn't get to become the manager in the movie. :(
