When Mr. Krabs was little, his grandfather taught him how to be a pirate, as seen in Grandpappy the Pirate.

In his school years, he was friends with Plankton, where he discovered his knack for cooking and his love for money. After his big fight with Plankton (shown in Friend or Foe), he couldn't decide whether he wanted to be a chef or a pirate.

Mr. Krabs settled on a compromise and decided he wanted to use his pirate skills and cooking skills for the navy, but they made him clean the bathrooms on the SS Gourmet. After complaining, they switched his position to be head chef on the SS Diarrhea. This is what we see in Pull Up a Barrel, along with the pirate skills Mr. Krabs had learned.

Mr. Krabs sneaks off to be a real pirate with the Squirrel Pirate, but she either dies or leaves him. Mr. Krabs does not make enough money and sells his ship, also shown in Grandpappy the Pirate. He is very upset about this, and secludes himself in an even the KK Training Video calls "a great depression that seemed endless".

He eventually snapped out of it, and used the money from the ship and his cooking skills from his days with Plankton to create the Krusty Krab.

EDIT: Then something happens and he gets Pearl.

According to Krusty Krab Training Video, Krabs was a shell-shocked war veteran. "After the war, Mr Krabs stayed secluded in a deep depression that seemed endless."

He fought in a war.

He saw friends die.

He killed.

I've never really thought about where Pearl fits into Mr. Krabs' history. When did he meet her mother? Did they stay together long? Are they divorced or did she die? Did Pearl come into Mr. Krabs' life during his Krusty Krab days, or before?

I feel like his wife could have died in the process of this, maybe while he was at war.

According to dialogue in the show, Pearl is either fifteen or sixteen. So most likely during his Krusty Krab days.

Hmm, yeah if the KK could be likely fifty years old (see Truth or Square and Buried in Time, maybe The Original Frycook because of the flashbacks' era) then it is true and Krabs had Pearl during his restaurant days like BabySmitty said. I just wonder how Mr. Krabs is able not to even reference the tragedy of the loss of his wife (or possible divorce).

Perhaps he sees a therapist. Or maybe he was already so shell-shocked from the war....

A lot of people have the theory that Krabs adopted Pearl, and that either Pearl's mother died very shortly after she met Krabs, or Krabs just found Pearl somewhere. If Krabs never knew Pearl's mother, it would explain why she isn't mentioned a lot.

Definitely after. The Krusty Krab is at least 50 years old.

In Whale of a Birthday he says hes had that banner since the day she was born. It's kinda unlikely he would be there for the birth of an adopted child.

I'm sure there is an episode where Mr. Krabs mentions Pearl's mother in passing.
There is. But maybe Krabs saw a picture of Pearl's mother, or more morbidly, only saw her corpse. So maybe he meant "Pearl looks like her mother," and never actually KNEW her mother.

Keep in mind that the episodes don't have a lot of continuity. We've seen Spongebob barefoot many times but for whatever reason, he claims to have been wearing shoes literally since the day he was born in "Your Shoe's Untied."

Pearl may actually be adopted, and a one-off visual gag wouldn't entirely contradict that, knowing the already shaky continuity the show has.

I deleted the post you replied to because I thought I was remembering wrong, but it was what Cha mentioned that I was thinking of (the banner he had on the day of her birth). He doesn't mention Pearl's mom directly, I don't think, but if he was around when she was born then he must have at least known who Pearl's mother was, so I don't think she was adopted.

Morbid thought- what if Pearl's mother died during childbirth? It would explain why she isn't mentioned much and why we've never seen her.

alternatively, Pearl's mother gave her up for adoption a la Juno?

I had a theory that Mr. Krabs found Pearl as an egg, mistaking her for a pearl and hoping to sell it for money, but then she hatched and he felt responsible for her and named her Pearl since that's what he thought she was. But then I remembered that whales are mammals and there is no such thing as whale eggs and my theory fell apart.

Dang it Pearl, why couldn't you have been a turtle or something?

My guess is that Krabs' days as chef on the S.S. Diarrhea were during the war. His wife (or maybe a girlfriend) must have went with him, but got killed, thus leading Krabs into depression, UNTIL... he finds Pearl, and uses his money from the Navy to buy out the Rusty Krab retirement home, and make it the Crusty Krab restaurant.
PS- I don't really think it was a squirrel pirate. SpongeBob is providing the visuals in the episode "Pull Up a Barrel", thus representing the girl pirate with Sandy.
PSS- Stephen does not allow any theories on how Krabs came across Pearl, just saying.

alternate theory- he had the "It's A Girl" banner by coincidence because it was somebody's birthday and that's the only banner he could find. Maybe Pearl was a doorstep baby.

He rejects Pearl origin plots for the show according to Waller.

You're not the first to try [to get the Pearl origin secret revealed], including writing staff. Steve says NO to any and all explanations Pearl's origin stories.
