Yeah. There's a difference between someone comically exploding for no apparent reason only to say "...ouch" nonchalantly, and someone getting their toenail graphically and brutally ripped off as they scream in agony.

But I also agree with Popeye. Squidward abuse can be hysterical. It's sort of like a running joke.
I agree. Squidward abuse early on was either A) so over-the-top and ridiculous that you can't take it seriously, or B) he deserved it for acting like a jerk.
Example. "Dying for Pie." Spongebob operating on Squidward, clearly puncturing his heart, blood spurting. It's a very quick gag, and he's totally fine in the next scene, and it's mentioned again. To an extent, karma was biting him in the butt, because he had acted like a jerk and endangered an innocent person's life. And it was too over-the-top and weird to take seriously.
"Jellyfishing" was funny because it was just plain stupid. Squidward was being a grump... then Squidward exploded, got hot soup blown in his face, got his hand impaled by a jellyfish net, and was repeatedly stung by jellyfish. HOWEVER... he got revenge on the people who caused him that pain, and at the end we saw that he was totally fine (albeit kind of confused and freaked out.)
Compare that to something like "Choir Boys." He wasn't doing anything remotely mean, and he was minding his own business. His dreams were ripped away from him, he was brutally stung and covered in pulsating pustules, and at the end of the episode he was clearly depressed about his life.
just my opinion... I might be wrong though. I mean, I'm probably one of the only people who felt bad for Squidward in "Club Spongebob." It was just kind of sad to watch him suffer like that.
