SpongeBob's sleeves ... like ... don't connect to the rest of his shirt

I don't say this to point out the blatantly obvious, but I make this topic because it just occurred to me that in all my years here I don't recall this ever having been discussed.

I'm interested to see if any of you can come up with a plausible, non-"it's-just-a-cartoon-so-they-take-their-creative-licenses" theory for this.

Notice that his sleeves, appropriately, change when his outfit does:

Here the sleeves LOOK more natural because they're longer than those of his regular shirt, but if you look closely you can see they're still not connected to his tux. His tux would have to go up as high as his chin to achieve this effect, but obviously that wouldn't look right either.

Notice how here they're as high up as his mouth.

I've noticed this so many times now, it's not even funny.

That's because it's a cartoon. I wonder if there are anytimes where the animators accidentally gave him sleeves when he had his shirt off, though.

He's had his sleeves on when he's in his underwear a few times.

Also, when he's wearing a water helmet, his arms like... go over and outside the helmet, like... what?

Yes. it kind of bothers me. not sure why. i think it would look best if they were placed down by the sides of his shirt. that would look most normal.

Unfortunatelly there is no other explanation than "It's because it's a cartoon".
This isn't even animation error, he's just like that.

Another thing, if how he blow bubbles with his hair helmet on, just like Wormy, when he is wearing the water helmet, and blows a bubble to capture the butterfly.

It's a cartoon =P

His sleeves are detachable.

This is because of his body shape.

He couldn't wear normal clothes because his arms are aligned with his face, and his face is his whole body. If he wears normal clothing, his sleeves wouldn't be detached, but his mouth will be fully covered by the shirt. That's also why his pants are also his shirt, by the way.

Perhaps his pants are a lot more important than we think. Perhaps that's the reason why sponges dedicate their last names to their pants. Perhaps at one time, sponges are left either naked or wear impossible clothing. Then, one day, a man, a sponge prophet if you will, thought of an invention that will change the lives of many sponges.

A onesie with a detachable sleeves.

Now, if the writers of To SquarePants or Not To SquarePants had thought about this, the episode would've been much more interesting.

His arms (and his sleeve) is actually separate from his body. They're attached and moves around his body because of magnets.

Questioning animated logic hurts my brain. I wish we could leave it at that, but the hole will just get deeper.

Sandy's face in the first picture though

Seriously, though, I don't really mind it. :p

His sleeves don't connect to his shirt because he's an anime magical girl.
You made me spit out my drink XD

Notice that almost every time Spongebob tries to wear a "normal" shirt or sweater, it looks weird on him. He's a very short little fellow and he doesn't have much of a neck to speak of.

SpongeBob looks sexy in that pose imo.
