This episode always bothered me a little, and DadMom's recent status gave me an opportunity to talk about it:

"Mr. Krabs should have sued SpongeBob's Pretty Patty stand for profiting off a slightly modified version of the Krabby Patty without his permission."

Spongebob, if this logic is correct, would also be guilty of A) stealing from his boss, B) unsanitary work conditions, and C) health hazards.

Spongebob created, and sold, food that caused skin discoloration and other negative side effects among customers. He got off scot-free, while Mister Krabs was punished.

In theory, Spongebob should have been sued for theft, plagiarism, and unsanitary food stand conditions.

Your thoughts?

No, because suing would ruin the fun of the episode. This is a children's cartoon, we don't need to put the concept of 'suing' into any episode of SpongeBob :P
plankton sued krabs in "krabs vs. plankton", though.

I don't think that unsanitary conditions/health hazards would be much of an issue considering the Bikini Bottom Department of Health's standards are apparently so low that the Krusty Krab can pass despite everything that goes on in the kitchen there.

True.

Negative health effects on the customers, however...

"YOUR PRETTY PATTIES TURNED MY FACE PURPLE!!"

Also, Mr. Krabs would probably sue one of his enemies and not his own loyal fry cook. All SpongeBob wanted to do was show his boss that he can create something better than the Krabby Patty and he did, impressing Mr. Krabs. Plus, if Mr. Krabs sued SpongeBob, it wouldn't be as fun as it was in Krabs vs. Plankton.

If you ask me, Mr. Krabs should work for Viacom and sue SpongeBob for replicating a copyrighted work in SpongeBob SquarePants. That way, he can earn even more money than he did working at the Krusty Krab.

Yeah, as questionable as Sponge's actions were, I felt so freaking bad for him here. Squidward and Krabs were such dicks.

Yes he should have but because of karma for not giving SB enough credit, Mr. Krabs was the one who suffered.

Nah, Spongebob had a good intention when he created the pretty patties...
And Mr. Krabs exchanged the Krusty Krab for the pretty patties stand, any judge would ask why he did it, if he didn't like him copying the krabby patties, and why he didnt sued spongebob before.

So Krabs wouldn't really win.

Mr. Krabs took over so it's all on him. Even though the laws here in the states would differ, I'm not sure what Bikini Bottom law would say about that. If everything happened with SpongeBob being in charge, then it would be him who would get in trouble. Otherwise, it's Mr. Krabs.

I never saw it this way. Pretty interesting. Maybe Mr.Krabs deserved the punishment after all, because in the beginning he didn't notice the "plagiarism", and he got punished in the end for his stupidity (he deserves the punishment because he's usually average intelligent).

Mr. Krabs could have, but he got the ownership of SpongeBob's stand and he didn't bother about that. Also for the skin discoloration health hazard, the effects only become apparent after Mr. Krabs own the pretty patties, so the blame goes to him instead.
